I definitely wouldn’t wait to chat with advisor. You’ll need degree plan set starting asap… especially for mays.
Yes I agree. It’s on the agenda for Monday. Would we talk to a general advisor or an advisor at Mays?
You can try mays but they are hard to get an appt with if not a mays student. Otherwise talk to admissions to see who can help you.
Honestly they are going to tell you to look at transfer requirements most likely. But can’t hurt to chat with them.
I’m also happy to help with degree plan.
I’ve been speaking with them for around 2 months. It seems all you need to transfer into Mays is a 3.5 overall GPA, a 3.5 GPA in required courses, and 30 graded hours at TAMU. There’s no competition in earning the highest possible GPA or anything like that. If you call Mays, they’ll say the same thing. If you meet those minimum requirements, you’re automatically able to transfer into Mays (if you want to).
This is only for internal transfer (much easier than external).
@sk_420 there is nothing automatic about transferring or changing majors into Mays. Change of Major is very competitive, a limited number are accepted (more apply then get accepted for change of major), so you’ll definitely want as close to 3.9-4.0, 3.5 is the minimum. Nothing is a given or automatic. Can’t have over 60 hours, and getting that 3.5 - 4.0 won’t be easy for many.
Straight from the Mays website -
If possible, have your correspondence with tamu via email. That way, you have written proof of what was said, plus you can always go back to it.
I am not accusing tamu of this particularly, but sadly, it is so easy for people to “say” things, or for there to be misunderstanding when talking on the phone. Emails tend to be more official.
ETA…on the phone
Yes… totally agree with this because Everything I have ever heard or seen is the complete opposite. In fact several majors don’t have a guaranteed change of major gpa. Those gpa a course requirements stated for change of majors are bare minimums.
Have seen, in the past year, a handful of Econ or ag bus majors get denied their request. All had 3.75 or higher.
So yes… get all the crazy nonsense you’re being told… in writing.
Regarding if my son decides to go to BLINN and attempt a PTA (Program for Transfer Admission, with a contract in writing with A&M that they will admit him) – I called the department for his major and they said that is all handled by Admissions. Then I called Admissions and they said they don’t know how to do PTA. I am tearing my hair out here at Admissions and this whole process.
@misterhemmings I thought your son was looking at Galveston now?
Have you looked at this link?
https://admissions.tamu.edu/apply/transfer/transfer-programs
Yes, he’s applied to Galveston and would go there if admitted! But we aren’t sure he’ll get in since he applied so late and - with his stats and getting PSA from CS we’re just gun-shy about getting hopes up. So as a backup to Galveston, he’s looking at PTA. To answer your second question yes we looked at that link. We want to find out how to get the agreement and what the process looks like (timing is key as he’d have to do placement test for community college math, enroll in Community College etc) and we’re trying to make summer plans all based around this.
You wouldn’t sign til after high school graduation fyi.
Would be great to know if he can sign after he starts taking a math class in community college, since that starts right after graduation. The timing is key, or maybe it isn’t - I dont’ know because I can’t find a person at TAMU who claims to be responsible for PTA contracts. Just got bounced to someone else.
My understanding is it’s done before you take any college courses post graduation. About to catch a flight but I’ll see if I can find out who you’ll talk to.
Edited: prospective student center and speak when admissions officer. Not a student. This is not done at the department/college level.
If I remember correctly your son wants Health or Biology, any reason why Blinn is not considered?
PTA contact or reference for Biology is Christine Farris. PM you her contact info.
Thanks. She said she isn’t the contact and honestly she isn’t sure who is… but said again, go through Admissions. I’ve landed on Lewis Rodriguez in Aggie Land Prospective Center whom two people in Admissions have said ‘is probably the person.’
I called undergrad advising and spoke to one of their faculty. They said as long as you meet the minimum, change can be made. If that were not the case, I wouldn’t commit so soon. I made sure to get confirmation.
I hear what you are saying but it should be troubling to you that what the advisor is telling you and what the website says are two different things. Do you understand how they are different?
The website (see @52AG82 earlier screen shot) says that 3.5 in the minimum gpa to be considered and that only about 100 will be allowed to transfer. That makes it a competition. If you are competing against 200 other students that have 4.0s and good ECs, that 3.5 wont do. If you talk to someone again, please ask why their words dont match the website. Just want you to go into it with your eyes wide open - go for the 4.0!
FWIW, my sons freshman roommate is now taking classes to transfer into Mays after spring semester. I believe he is a 4.0 student but minimal ECs. He hasn’t renewed his apartment room because he doesnt know for sure that he will get into Mays. If not, he will go elsewhere.
@Eggscapgoats yep, it definitely isn’t easy OR a given that Mays change of major is granted, just by completing the required courses and getting 3.5.
Way more than 100 apply for those coveted spots…
It’s pretty obvious that it states that these things are the minimum and sometimes people just hear what they want to and read things the way they want to
