Hi all

I was wondering which Texas college do you guys think would be best for me? I'm interested in majoring in something business related, like accounting. Right now I'm in the top 5% of my class at rank 20 and have a 3.9 GPA UW. I'm in 4 clubs, 3 of which I'm an officer and take multiple AP classes. I'm working on getting more volunteer hours and I'm taking the SAT in about 2 weeks, same for the ACT. I'm also Hispanic American and come from a low income family. Teacher recs. won't be a problem and I write essays fine.

Right now my top colleges are:

UT at Austin
A&M
SMU
Texas Tech
Ohio State
University of Rochester

What do you think would be best for me? Which colleges of the listed have the best business programs and are there any other suggestions?

UT - Austin without a doubt. It has the only reputable and nationally recognized business school out of the bunch. If you are a Texas resident, you should be able to get in with your stats.

UT Austin. Clearly.

You’ve developed a good working list so far. Addressing just Texas schools, I agree you should shoot for UT-Austin (you will be auto-admitted, but top 5% doesn’t guarantee admission to the business school, see the link below for details), but their merit and financial aid is sometimes disappointing. You are wise to include SMU, and I suggest you consider adding TCU, as well, to maximize your chances of getting a financial package that works for you and your family.

[Getting Admitted | McCombs School of Business | The University of Texas at Austin](http://new.mccombs.utexas.edu/BBA/Prospective/Admission.aspx)

I would consider UT Austin but also A&M or Rice. they are the best options for your money seeing as you sound like you might qualify for financial aid. However, I am a current freshman at A&M. I had nearly the same qualifications as you with National Merit, top 3% and a slightly higher rank and I still was not admitted into McCombs.
So just as a warning, I would not put all your eggs in the UT basket as many people are advising you.
Definitely submit an app to UT and Rice and do it early!! The earlier, the better your chances but consider a school like A&M that is not as renowned as UT for business, however has really great career placement.
Best of luck!

yaydiana, I don’t know that Rice is necessarily the best choice for someone looking to major in business. While Rice does offer undergrad classes in business, accounting, management, etc., it does not actually have an undergraduate business school. However, if the OP is interested in getting a degree in a related field, such as economics, and then getting an MBA later, Rice could be a good option. And for anyone who does decide to apply to Rice, submitting early really doesn’t have much effect unless you apply early decision, as admissions are not rolling.

@KrissyBerns Im on the exact same boat as you.

Look into Trinity University if you are interested in a small school. It may be more expensive than UT or A&M depending on the aid package you are offered, but more students graduate in 4 years at Trinity than at UT or A&M so that can save you money.
