Texas Common App

Hey guys just wondering if I should write the Topic C on the Texas Common app. I am automatically in by rank but I will be applying at McCombs. Anyone have any insight?

You should be using Topics A and B to showcase yourself as best as possible. If, for whatever reason, you think that you have more to say then use Topic C to round out your application. However, most people can get what they want across using the two required topics. Don’t think that adcoms will grab your application and say “Look! He did topic C!” as if writing an extra essay were a sign of commitment.

If you have something to say, then Topic C is your chance to do that but don’t write it just so that you can say you’ve written it.

Thanks for the info!

Both of the college advisors that my son talked to said “If it says optional, you do it”

Anyone else?

well, i’m auto admit as well, but applying Cockrell. I heard McCombs is even harder than Cockrell so good luck xD
I did essay C. My ACT and SAT scores are both around average of the past year admissions for Cockrell. My ECs are not that good either(officer at one club, joined various other ones, but did not bother with NHS or Red cross etc)…So I really don’t have much advantage except for my rank…i’m keeping my fingers crossed.

I did the essay just in case…Since it’s an optional essay, i doubt it’s going to have a negative impact on your achievement index. So just do it anyways, it’s only a page…especially if your ECs are not that amazing…

As an immigrant, I did face some hardships, as well as my family financial problems, parents divorce etc. And I just expanded on those hardships. For Essay A and B you want to keep the attitude positive, for C it can be slightly negative. But the conclusion should be something positive.

I agree its not going to show commitment or anything, but the extra essay should at least give you SOME points towards your achievement index(unless it was pure garbage…)
