Last year, when I took the PSAT as a sophmore, I got a 213 and by my score, it had an asterisk which said that I didn't make National Merit. This year, I got a 216, but there is no asterisk. However, last couple years, there was a 217 as the Texas score. Does this absence of the asterisk mean that I did make it?

I believe the asterisk would have been because, as a sophomore, you were ineligible for National Merit - only Juniors are eligible. The lack of an asterisk this time does not mean anything either positive or negative. Semi finalists will not be decided till next year.

**** wow...that means I probably missed the cutoff by ONE POINT.....WOW.....

It should be right around 213 or 214 this year. According to the percentiles table for PSAT 2006 - 212 is still 99%ile. Texas percentiles are usually higher than National percentiles, so I think 216 should make it.

Unfortunately, you may need to wait until they announce semi-finalists. I am pretty sure 216 should be above cutoff since last year writing section was lot easier than this year's.

Did your Selection Index say it 99 percentile? I

Yes, my SI says 99%ile.

i bet you made it.

"Texas percentiles are usually higher than National percentiles"

Pokalas, how would one find out the national percentile for CA compared to National? Is it lower, higher or the same as national? Thanks

California would be higher.

wow arkansas has a low low low national merit cutoff... well it isnt really as low as i made it sound but its about ten points lower.

Indira - Did you look at the state percentiles for each section? If you are from CA, you should see your state percentile for each section. If the national percentile is lower than the state percentile, you could infer that you SI's state percentile could be higher.

In Texas, National 97%ile in Writing and CR is 98%ile. That should move you up. This is only a guess SI percentiles can be higher or lower. Collegeboard is going to announce them in Feb 2007.

Even CA cutoff should be right around Texas. Last year it moved up 2 points to 219b but this year I am expecting 214 or 215 should be a NMSF.
If you got 215, you should make it.

Pokalas, Thanks for the reply. I guess 219 would have a good chance.

Texas PSAT scores always vary greatly from year to year.
Wasn't it around 214 three years ago, but 218 last year?
Anyway, I'd say there's a good chance you made it.
