Texas State Competitiveness? Not # who audition

My D had very little experience, no audition coach, vocal training or dancing skills whatsoever and she is NOW freshmen in the program. I do believe that Kaitlin and Jim are looking for actors. They specifically said that singing and dancing can be taught, acting can NOT. My D was accepted based on her natural acting ability without having any formal training. Also, as far as being competitive, the numbers are a little higher than you would think. Last year (2013), there were almost 7,000 applicants, over 300 callbacks and 14 accepted. Kaitlin just has to see the overall package and that’s how she decides. The audition is based on personality as well. I believe she sees the star quality in each of her students, regardless of their “experience”.

In re-reading the previous post, I want to clarify a few things and make sure I am providing accurate information. First of all, I noticed an extra zero in the number of applications received, it should have been 700, NOT 7,000. Second of all, Kaitlin would not say that acting is not teachable. She might actually say that “natural instincts” as an actor is not teachable, those are God given, but of course acting and the “technique of acting” can most definitely be taught, which is the primary focus of the program at Texas State. In terms of the entire curriculum as approached from an acting standpoint; dance, singing and acting are all equally important. There is definitely equal emphasis on all 3 disciplines but they are all approached from the standpoint of an actor and of storytelling. I hope that makes sense.

We know a girl who was accepted into the MT program last year and a boy into the Acting program and Waitlisted for MT this year, neither of them used Mary Anna Dendard. The girl is much more of a lyric soprano than belter but she is a true triple threat. The boy is a fantastic actor and great dancer, with singing good but not exceptional. I think the analysis that acting is the most important at TSU is supported by these decisions.

Boy from same HS my boys’ attended was accepted at TSU-SM for MT this year. He did not use MTCA or Mary Anna Dennard. He is extraordinarily talented, however. Outstanding triple-threat. TSU is lucky to have him and I’m sure he will shine there :)

This is so encouraging! Easy to feel overwhelmed as your child begins this audition process! My D was so impressed with Texas State at Unifieds! Any advice now?

Relax. It’s out of your control. There is still another on campus audition in 2 weeks. You may receive an email telling you if your daughter is in the pool of applicants being considered. If she is, great. hang in there. If not, be glad she did her best and move on to another great option. BAL!

If you did not get a letter saying you are still in the pool of applicants does this mean you are not still being
considered ?

You should get an answer either way. Callbacks just ended and the final list may still be in progress. They are not sent out all at once. Email them in a few weeks if you do not hear. You need an answer. Good Luck!
