Hello!!
I’ve narrowed down my college choices to Texas State and St. Mary’s University in San Antonio, and I’m having a reallllllyyy hard time deciding between the two. I’m going to be entering college as a pre med majoring in biology.
For Texas state, I got accepted into the honors college and am really excited!! Normally I would avoid a school like TXST because I like a smaller environment much more and feel like I would do much better, but the honors college gives me a small community feel, even more so because I’ll be staying in the honors hall if I do end up going. I also love the fact that they have dance organizations on campus and really look forward to joining!! The reason I’m having some doubts about TXST is because it’s known to be a party school. I don’t mind going out with friends for a good time, but big college parties really aren’t my thing, and I feel like I’d be really uncomfortable in that scene. Also, I feel like it might be harder to get leadership positions or distinguish myself at a larger school like TXST because of the competition.
As for St. Mary’s, I like it a lot too. I’m not in the honors program or anything, so I might not get the same opportunities I’ll get at TXST. I’ve heard really good things about studying bio there, and I like that they have a residence hall specifically for STEM majors, including a biology LLC. They don’t have a dance company I’m interested in joining on campus, so I’ll have to look for nearby studios, but they do have a theatre troupe which is open to all majors that I’m really interested in. I feel like it would be much easier to distinguish myself from others and take on leadership positions.
So far I’m interested in Greek life, but I like the Greek life community way more at St. Mary’s. I’m not sure I would join a sorority at Texas State.
Both colleges have given me really good financial aid offers, but TXST has given me a better one.
I honestly am so stuck right now. I think I like St. Mary’s more, but I don’t want to turn down the opportunities at Texas State because they’re amazing. I’m getting really stressed out because most people have already made a decision, but I’m still stuck :(( PLS HELP!!!
The party school tag for Texas State is overblown. It is a large university with a lot of stuff going on. Yes, some students party a lot, but probably no more than at any other school. If you are thinking med school, your undergrad needs to be as financially friendly as possible. If Texas State has given you more money, and the other costs (such as housing, meal plan, etc.) are covered, then that should be your choice.
I’ve heard really good things about St. Mary’s. If you like the school more and you can afford it, go with it.
