Thank you notes for Scholarships?

First child heading to college and not quite certain of proper etiquette. Are thank you notes to organizations and foundations for scholarships appropriate?

My child's school required one each year as a condition of the named scholarship. It was sent to the FA office for forwarding.

Absolutely yes.

Definitely, it is very correct and welcome to send thank-you notes for scholarships. I've been on scholarship committees, and it has amazed me how few students show that courtesy. The ones who do send notes definitely are remembered, and often get other opportunities.

Never second guess yourself when it comes to whether it's appropriate to send a thank-you note. If you think it may be appropriate, it definitely is appropriate.

I attend University on a full academic scholarship and as soon as my final grades are posted, I send off a nice thank you note to the scholarship office and the scholarship office then forwards it to the folks who fund my scholarship. It is no big deal and it is totally good manners.

Yes, my S's school requires thank you notes for scholarships given by the school also. One of his scholarships ( from his major dept.) requires him to attend a coat and tie dinner every spring and have dinner with the people who represent his scholarship sponsor. The department says this really helps in keeping the scholarship sponsors when they meet the kids they are supporting face to face.

Yes...a handwritten (not email) thank you note should be written to any organization who gives a student a scholarship. As a member of such a group, I can tell you..the notes are read aloud and passed around for all to see. Then they are kept in that year's notebook. Also, some groups actually have the kids come in person. When my DS did that, he actually took the thank you note with him and gave it to the head of the organization at the reception. Both kids mailed the others.
