Thanksgiving at Emory

Hi, I will be a freshman at Emory in the Fall and I'm from California and don't think I'm going to be able to fly home for Thanksgiving. What is it like to stay in the dorms during Thanksgiving break? Should I ask my parents to reconsider? Or see if I can get an invite to an Atlanta friend's house for the the holiday weekend? I would imagine there would be a large enough crowd of international students staying over but wanted to hear firsthand what it's like.

Pretty much, the only people who’ll be on campus will be international students/RAs.
Even most international students go on vacation trips, though.
If you’re on campus, the cafeterias will be closed, and pretty much nobody will be on campus (however the village is nearby so you won’t starve if you’re willing to spend $20-30 each day). I guess you could ask your parents to reconsider, but it might be a bit relaxing being here by yourself (and you go home two to three weeks later anyway for winter break). Personally, I don’t go home (but I do leave campus to visit other family). Seeing if you can get an invite could work too, depending on what sort of friends you make. I wouldn’t put too much hope in that, however.

I was a freshman this past year and I am from NJ. I decided to stay at Emory b/c I figured it was a lot of travelling to back and forth and then to do it again in another few weeks. I found the break to be very relaxing and stress free. I am doing it again this year. However, I did have some step-family who I went to for Thanksgiving and my roommate was an international student. Her and her other international friends stayed in Atlanta for the break. Another girl from NJ, stayed here and went to a friend from Atlanta’s house for Thanksgiving. There will definitely be some people here over the break, it just a matter of reaching out. I had a lot of fun and it was a great time for me to relax and catch up on my work.

The downside of staying is that there is not many ppl to talk to and most ppl stay in their dorms, so you really need to find out who is around and make plans ahead of time. It just depends on how comfortable you feel either making friends and reaching out or spending the break by yourself. Hoped this helped :D

Perhaps your parents would be willing to have Thanskgiving in Atlanta?
