I was put on the wait list for the class of 2013. Vassar is still my top choice, but does anyone really have any chance of getting in off the waitlist? I can't find much information about the Vassar waitlist anywhere online. Can anyone help me out?

I can tell you a little about last year, an exceptional year because it was the first that some schools including Harvard did not have EA. Harvard reportedly then took 200 students off it’s waiting list. My daughter and several of her (female) freinds were waitlisted. She and one of her freinds asked to be placed on the waitlist and at the beginning of May recieved calls and e-mails asking if they were still interested in Vassar. My daughter said she was and found out a couple of days later that she was accepted. By the way, she is extremely happy there

The number of students accepted of a waiting list depends on how accurately the school guesses how many students will accept their offer and the “melt” - the number of students who withdraw their acceptance after being given a position off a waitlist elsewhere.

The letter my daughter received last year said that no students were taken of the waitlist the year before but that one year 50 students were.

My observations are that if Vassar is really your first choice go on the waitlist you may be surprised. If not, don’t waste the chances of another student and the time of the admissions department. If your stats were such that you feel you schould have been accepted you probably did not indicate clearly enough that Vassar was the school you really wanted. In accepting a position on the waitlist you should make it clear that you will attend if accepted.

S is a freshman this year. One of his friends was wait listed last year. He followed up with admissions to let them know he really wanted to go to Vassar. He got in. So there is hope.

Just a question, but is the financial aid worse if you’re a wait-listed student? I would love to go to Vassar and feel that I would be happiest there, but I received some nice financial aid from Middlebury and could never convince my parents to let me attend a “lower ranked” (in the eyes of USNWR) school if they gave me a worse financial deal. Thanks

Well, Vassar is a need-blind school, so I think the financial aid will be fine.

How many students are offered a spot on the waitlist? How many usually accept the offer to stay on the waitlist?

How about last year’s stats?

Anyone know?

I know for my year (2011), no one was taken off of the waitlist because of the higher than expected matriculation rate. Last year there were a number of students taken off the waitlist, but I’m not sure about the numbers. Here’s the thread from last year’s class… hopefully it will help you at least get a sense of the time frame in which students are usually taken off the list: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/vassar-college/506161-waitlist.html.

How is everyone dealing with the waitlist, now?

I’m staying on the waitlist but sending in my money to another school

supposedly this year the waitlist is more than twice as long as it has been in other years because they are so unsure of how many accepted students will attend in this economy.

i was told that is a good thing since fewer accepted students will attend, but to me it looks like a smaller percentage of waitlisted students will be accepted, so…

i guess we’ll just have to wait and see!

Does anyone know if you can defer your acceptance for a year if you get accepted off the waitlist?

If you are accepted off the waitlist you cannot defer for a year. However, my daughter’s freind who was accepted off the wait list last year, was told last year that if she applied ED the this year, based on her qualifications, she would be accepted.

Only a few more days until they look at the waitlisted applications. If they are going to look at them at all that is… I have a bad feeling that the yield is going to be higher than last year because of the economy. Vassar does have a pretty generous financial aid program…

Let’s hope Vassar looks at the waitlist and accepts waitlisted students (including me)!

Any word on whether or not Vassar’s using their waitlist?

Vassar hasn’t decided yet apparently. I just called the Admissions Office.

I might call Vassar (at the end of the week) to find out if they’re going to use the waitlist.

It just makes me puzzled to hear rumors that there’s a waitlist twice as long (meaning that Vassar could use it) and that Vassar could get overenrolled (possibility, but even with Vassar’s aid, some students opt for state schools b/c of financial situation).

I hope that’s the case. If you do call, you should post it here!

The response that you get from the admissions office, that is.

I’ll definitely call Vassar by Friday. Of course, b/c of the time difference, I’ll try to call before the afternoon.

I looked at old forum posts, and Vassar’s waitlist activity varies by year. From the past year’s evidence, if Vassar uses the waitlist, acceptances could come out between 5/8-5/15. Judging from the unpredictability of this year’s yield, there might still be hope!
