I’m sure everyone is just thrilled that the common app comes out tomorrow. Not sure if anyone made one of these yet, but it would be nice to have a thread to discuss any questions/concerns/comments about the application.
Good luck everyone! May the college process be ever in your favor
Can one only respond to one of the five essay prompts, and use that for every application? I would much rather type different essays for schools that focus on different things, such as religious schools versus technically oriented ones. Thanks!
@Tommy60 many schools have supplements you can use to write about something specific, but I am pretty sure your common app prompt essay has to be the same for every school
How many times can a student change/update the CA once it’s completed. Can a student create on version for early apps, then update and change it for later apps to be sent?
@dyiu13 I have been adding stuff to my CA throughout the day, I have deleted, edited, and put in new stuff a bunch of times already haha. I dont think there is a limit, but if say you applied to 4 schools, then changed your CA and applied to 5 more, I feel like the first 4 schools could see your newly edited version
@ballerina16 how do you connect CA to Naviance? I hand selected my colleges to apply to on the CA bc I am not sure if one can transfer the info. It was easy to do though
Google it. I found a video yesterday. The problem is I already have EA schools selected in Naviance. In the video they said to do it the other way around
@ballerina16 that was last year…one of the changes on the common app for this year is that you can have as many versions as you want - you are no longer limited to three.
For all the schools that are on the Common App and also require supplements, will all the supplements be on the Common App college profile when I add the college?
@PartyNextDoor yes some of them come up as a separate “writing” tab on the college while others are included in the general “questions section”. When I added mine, I also googled the ones I did not see right away just to make sure.
@PartyNextDoor and @laughandlearn23, thought you’d find this list helpful. It summarizes the additional essay requirements for 200+ Common App schools so you can (1) size up the work effort and (2) identify schools where you can apply without an extra essay. As @laughandlearn23 mentions, just because a school doesn’t have a writing supplement doesn’t mean it doesn’t have extra prompts to complete; they’re often in the embedded in the general questions section.
@2018eastorwest give it a day or two. You can also check the admission website of the colleges to see when their supplemental questions/essays will be posted.
Hey everyone…I’m still a bit confused about the essay…I want to submit two different essays on common app…can someone explain how I can do this? Thanks so much!
Check the knowledge base on common app website. It will tell you how to do this. Last year, you could only have three changes to your common app. This year may be different, so make sure you know the rules.
Generally, you will only select your “college A” for example, and upload your essay that you want for that particular school… Then you must finish the process by submitting the fee for the application. Once you have totally finished submitting, then you cannot make any more changes to “college A”. For “college B” you would do the same thing, except use a different essay. THIS NEEDS TO BE VERIFIED, so check to see the exact steps.
Unlimited Edits
Also this year for the first time, students will be allowed to make as many edits to their Common App essay as they want after submission. Previously, students were only allowed three essay edits after the first submission, intended to allow students to make minor changes like correcting spelling and grammar errors. Now, students will be allowed to make unlimited changes to the essay, mirroring the unlimited changes students could already make to other parts of the application. This will allow students to make adjustments for each submission – possibly further tailoring their personal statement to a particular school if they see fit
