the 3 best colleges in each state

i beg to differ, top MD schools:
community college baltimore county (CCBC)
anne arundel community college (AACC)
southern high school

New York:
Columbia
NYU
Cornell

Massachusetts:
MIT
Harvard
Tufts

California
Caltech
Standford
Harvey Mudd/Pomona

I feel hesitant putting Pomona up there as it let in my exgirlfriend that got a 1820 on her SATs and had matching grades.

Virginia
UVA
William and Mary
University of Richmond

Standford? And you feel you can speak for California colleges when you misspell the most prestigious one? Standford?

In addition, you forgot Berkeley; Mudd's good for science/engineering, but is pretty limited and doesn't go beyond undergrad.

Poster probably did not "forget" Berkeley. If you consider Mudd and Pomona together (and you can, since they are basically two schools in a Claremont University), they do cover many areas of undergraduate education and are more encompassing than the average LAC is. People say Mudd is limited, but they forget that Pomona and CMC, two amazing LACs with entirely different focuses, are on the same campus. The amount of cross-registering in classes among the consortium is very high. It's best to consider Pomona and Mudd together in one university because it is fairer to both to do so.

Also, I would argue that Caltech is more limited than Mudd for undergraduate education. While Caltech does allow students to enter more specialized majors, it really offers no legitimate cross-registering. Students can't really off-campus major if they want to have something non-science. Plenty of people at Mudd have off-campus majors as a second major and take classes at Pomona and CMC (and Scripps and Pitzer).

Can I just say really quickly that if you have no idea of what colleges are in a particular state, you should probably not post regarding that state?

That being said, I'll go ahead and rank my home state.

Colorado:
Colorado College
University of Denver
Regis
runners up: CU system

lol surprised i actually made that mistake. oh well. and pretty much atomic covered my reasons for putting a tech school in their. (or 2 for that matter, but caltech DOES have a grad and doctorate program at least)

although this part also gives mudd a good kudos from me:
A third of the student body are National Merit Scholars, and about 40 percent of graduates go on to earn a Ph.D. — the highest rate of any college or university in the nation. (wikipedia)

umm, yeah, I don't anything about the Naval Academy:).
Definitely wouldn't put Towson or Loyola over UMBC.

I'll rank my home state and my college's state...

Florida
1. UF
2. UM
3. UCF

Mass.
1. Amherst
2. Harvard
3. MIT

Yes, that's IN order...deal with it ;)

For California, Stanford is a given; Berkeley is pretty obvious too. The other one is up for debate, and I'd fill the last spot with Caltech (others seem to agree with me, too).

There is no way that UCF is viewed as a better school than FSU, under any circumstances. Even by US News, FSU has always been ranked in the first two tiers, while UCF is a 4th tier school. FSU may not be considered to be as great as UF, but comparing it to UCF is simply ridiculous. FSU is light years ahead of all Florida public universities, NOT including UF. It's one thing to express your opinions on this boards, but the facts will still remain the facts.

Anton, did you just say that NYU is better than Cornell? Did you actually say that NYU belongs on the top 3 in NY. It might sneak onto the top 10, but certainly not top 3. And since when is Tufts better than Amherst and Williams?

this thread needs to die.

"I'll rank my home state and my college's state...

Florida
1. UF
2. UM
3. UCF
"
I would choose University of Miami over UF any time...
Florida:
UM
UF
FSU

ckmets13,

Sorry I didn't mean that to be in order. I don't think NYU is better than Cornell (though it might be in some departments such as Econ and Philosophy). Still I do believe it is definitely one of the top 3 in New York State.

As far as Massachusetts - yes I think Tufts is one of the top 3. Maybe it is my own bias to universities over LACs. I think the top schools in order are 1) MIT 2) Harvard 3) Tufts.

For a lot of states, like MA, 4 is really for appropriate, but it wouldn't include tufts.

MA:
1.H
2.M
3.A
4.W

im sorry, there is no way NYU is better than

West Point
Colgate
Vassar
Hamilton

and Tufts is basically an LAC with some decent grad programs, whereas Amherst and Williams are just better LACs

Louisiana:
Tulane
...
...

It's a beautiful state...

Michigan:

UMich
Kalamazoo
MSU

Hope and Calvin College are decent too. Wayne State is good for pre-med.
