Going to be a senior next year, but I am doing PSEO next year full time, so I will be taking college courses at a college.. I got a 17 on my ACT and it's been bugging me since I saw my score I can't stop thinking about it..... I'm from MN and I want to go to the U of MN, St.Thomas, U of M Morris, or Hamline University. The ACT is coming up and hopefully this time my score will raise up. I'm having thoughts that colleges will look at my score first and then put it in the "Don't Accept" pile.

My GPA is 3.7

Future Key Club member.

Try taking the SAT

@tigerman333 Not sure if I should.

@Murtillon you should 100% take the SAT. The ACT is made for people who can take tests very quickly. The SAT provides a slower pace for you and you may as well take a practice test to see how it is.

Did you study for it? How many ACT practice tests did you do “fully timed”?
What study guides did you use.

@TomsRiverParent I bought “The REAL ACT prep book”,Kaplan book and Barrons. I got a tutor, but I feel like it’s not helping at all.

Did you do any fully timed practice tests from the Real ACT book? What were you scoring?

I want to ask how hard did you study hard for the ACT. I was somewhat in your situation, but I studied pretty hard over the summer and I was able to raise my score overall by quite a bit. If you need any tips or suggestions from me about the ACT, feel free to send me a PM.

@FlyEagle17 I’ve been practicing, but not fully committed, because I couldn’t handle AP work and study the ACT at the same time. And please do PM me tips and suggestions.

@TomsRiverParent I’ve been practicing, but not fully committed, because of school work. I tried to balance it out, but I couldn’t. In the book I’ve just did untimed practice.

Thats part of your problem.
And find a new tutor.
That is the #1 thing any tutor will tell you to do. Do fully timed test. The entire test in 1 sitting. Then you can analyze the problems.

@TomsRiverParent The tutor I paid for I felt like I knew everything already, so I went to a different tutor at a local library and it was the same feeling.

Also check out the test optional schools. For some people, standardized tests confuse the issues instead of providing relevant information that will help admissions committee get a handle on who the applicant is. You might be one of those people.

To all: If I don’t do great on the ACT next week, is it okay to take it again in September?

And neither tutor told you to take fully timed tests?
smh
You don’t really need a tutor. You can self-study and probably do better.
I wouldn’t take it more than 3 times.

@TomsRiverParent Why not take it more than 3? Will colleges know?

I don’t know much about the ACT. However, many (including guidance counselors) have said don’t take it more than 3 times. Many colleges will know/find out how many times you took it.
