PNWedwonk, socks are another thing I am looking around for reasonably priced ones but the wool and wool blend are not a cheap venture. I am finding I cannot find them in packets of twos or threes. Have you had any luck?

Let me know if you find any socks that come for big feet. My son is a size 14 shoe.

I haven’t seen wool ones in multi packs. I found a few pairs on clearance last month at a local shoe store and grabbed them. I’m lucky that S’s feet aren’t too big (11.5)! REI is running their summer sale right now. Lakemom, would these work for your S?

My son doesn’t attend Rochester but is doing an internship there this summer and lives in the dorms. Bring a USB cable for your laptop, he forgot his and had to buy another one. Don’t know whether it was a lack of wireless availability or the wireless was just slow/unreliable.

Perhaps PNWedwonk. We have an REI by us so maybe I will go and check out what kind of larger socks they have. Thanks!

Wireless is going to be slower in general than the extremely fast wired connections at an institution that sits directly on the net. So bring a cable. I believe swdad1 meant an ethernet cable. You can get long ones for cheap on Amazon. Gives you the option of plugging it in and leaving the other end anywhere in the room.

This isn’t necessarily a “what to bring” question, but I am bringing my son’s 16 year old sibling. Does anybody have any experience with the teen sibling program?

No experience, but my 16 year old is likely to be there too. He’s hoping the improv is good.

Found socks!!! Cheap!!! I had a tip from a Buffalo cousin to go to a military surplus store and guess what?!? $2.50 per pair for 50% wool blend. I can breathe, now on to the coat!!! :)

*Oh, my son wears a size 13 and they had them to fit him.

Bump…just because the kids are so close to entering!!!

Okay, I’ll start. I read on one of the FB postings that someone recommended having a small rug right when you walk in to your room, I guess to keep from tracking in any water/snow from the outside on to the floor. Did any one’s student do this?

Yes, having a small rug is nice. A boot tray is also really good. It doesn’t have to be a tray; a plastic box, like a smallish storage box that isn’t too deep, is good for catching any snow melt or mud, etc. You can find small rugs at any of the discount department stores in the area.

Thanks for the tip. I hadn’t thought about that, but it makes perfect sense.

Whatever school or dorm room or apartment any of my kids ever lived in, a small rug was needed and easily bought at Target, Bed, Bath, Urban Outfitters, IKEA… wherever. Also essential is a dustbuster or small vacuum-not only for those times when you or someone else is eating chips or crackers on your bed but for the small pebbles and wet leaves that get tracked in from the outside and you need to vacuum up.

Helpful thread!

Does anyone have a link to room layout plans or videos of rooms? Are there microwaves in the communal kitchens in the freshman dorms?

Boot recommendations? Coat recommendations?

Are vacuums or irons or other equipment borrowable from a central desk?

Thanks!

You can find videos of rooms through the Facebook pages for various classes. Search for them. But to be blunt, the rooms are all large so you don’t need to worry about things fitting. For example, my kid was in SueB. We found videos of various room configs - beds raised or “lofted” to different heights, ways of setting of the armoires & dressers - but the reality is the room was so big it didn’t matter. The Quad rooms tend to be larger.

You can get a vacuum. Don’t know about an iron. Many kids share a microwave with a roommate, meaning you talk over the summer and divide up who brings what: I’ll bring the tv, you bring the fridge, etc.

Wow, this post looks really helpful! Thank you WayOutWestMom and Lergnom for all your contributions to U of R board here!

So almost a year has gone by since I did my last post to this thread. I would add that if you plan to make any food/drink in your room to bring a scrubby/sponge and small dishsoap container to wash out mugs and bowls. I left my son a roll of paper towels and cleaner which came in handy when a bottle of soda exploded in his mini fridge when he put it too close to the freezer part.

And I did find a source of large size socks from a site called sock addict that sells smart wool at a discount.

Anything you need but forgot is available in the shopping area in Henrietta. There is Target, Walmart, Sam’s Club, either a Lowe’s and/or Home Depot, Best Buy, WEGMANS, etc, etc, etc. It’s all there

Are bed lifts, particularly 7", allowed, and, if so, are they recommended?
