The AP French Language Thread

I'm screwed for AP French. I got a 30% on a mock exam....

Oh. Ouch.

I don't know what I got on my mock exam yet, but I think I got a 3/5. Decent. I'm going to try and go for the 4 now.

i'm really worried about the reading-- i can never finish in time! the irony of it is, my strength in french is reading and analyzing texts, so i'm not sure why this happens..

my daughter is thinking of taking AP Fr Language as a sophomore next
year. How much average homework is there every day? How hard
is the test viewed to be? What are the texts like? She is the only freshman in a fourth year
French lit course this year but has not had any classes in language
since the fifth grade (in a bilingual French/English school).

Many thanks, CC'ers!

every teacher is different, but I get a fair amount of homework in ap french this year. I was a year ahead in french as a sophomore, and I could have taken the ap test last year (I'm a senior now), but I decided to take an extra year of french before taking the ap. one of the reasons was that no one signed up for ap french last year and I would have had to do all the studying on my own, but I'm honestly glad that I waited to take the ap. I feel that my background in french is more solid than it was last year, and I feel more prepared for the exam. But I would think the language exam would be pretty easy for someone in a bilingual French/English school.

My d left the bilingual school after the 5th grade and went to a public
middle school where took a little Spanish. She is back in private school
as a 9th grader. So she really hasn't had any grammar, etc. since
fifth grade. The French course she is finishing up this year is a
lit course with Camus, etc. but not nearly as heavy duty as AP
French Literature. What texts have you been using this year?
Would you estimate an hour+ of homework per night?

There are 3 required novels as well as several plays and poems. Some classes will even cover additional material. There could easily be an hour of homework per night and grammar is important to the exam. Unless she is a native speaker or has natural ability in french, it would be difficult, but not impossible. I would recommend going into the class the level below AP.

we've read works such as Pierre et Jean, Huis Clos, Les Mains Sales, etc. we do exercises from "une fois pour toutes" and a blue cahier called "AP French." I think time spent on homework is really up to the individual. AP courses are about training yourself to put in as much effort as possible, and one hour+ of homework a night is realistic. however, many people in my class (myself included) don't always do quite that much because we are all taking several other APs and it can be hard to balance. The main thing I would consider is how much time and effort she is willing to put into the class. I know I never read Camus in 9th grade, so it sounds like she is getting to do some advanced reading at a comparatively early age.

Thanks for your reply, Boomer. Not a bad idea, but it pushes the AP
into her junior year, when she will probably be taking an even tougher
course load. But worth exploring, which I will do.

Ginger - Thanks also for your reply. Yes, the course she is taking this
year is interesting. It covers Francophone lit, and apparently Camus
had North African origins so they read "Caligula" - a text I sure as
heck wasn't reading at barely 14 years of age!Interesting subplots
in that one - to say the least. Caligula had quite a social life! LOL!!!!

i only saw her twice a week and she gave one reading per week (like a practice reading excercise from an ap test) and one page (20 verbs) to fill in and one page (20 preps) to fill in.. it was a big joke and i think everyone will fail now.

we don't do anything in ap french. absolutely nothing. I think I am going to fail

same here.
we just recently started speaking. and the fill in the blanks.

I Didn't Even Have A Class This Year!!!!11

my teacher wasn't so great and i used barron's review
this is the only test i am prepared for (only because it is tomorrow) I hope i fall in line with my other classes too xD i might not even go to school...

My fingers are crossed for the 2 that I'm bound to receive - and that's if all goes well.

My teacher sucks. I can't "listen" well. We've done nothing except make posters all year. Fantastique!

my teacher claims i dont care about the class and accuses me of "making up stories" when i try to defend myself. *****!!!
excuse my french. har har har.
she wastes time and then goes on about how worried that we are all going to fail the AP. gee i wonder why.

ok i asked this like 5 times lol but
IF WE GUESS ON THE NON-MULTIPLE CHOICE (FILL INTHE BLANK SECTION) do they deduct poitns if its wrong? or do we just get 0 points for it? this way i'll know if its worth taknig a blind guess.

I dont think they deduct on the fill-ins - - but for credit, you need to get the whole thing right - not just the auxillary verb or whatever

i can't believe that the test is tomorrow. I also have this huge english project due.

"i can't believe that the test is tomorrow. I also have this huge english project due."
For some weird twisted reason, all my non-AP teachers want to pick next week to assign a load of homework. i'm going to end up not doing it :-(
