The Atlantic & College Board Writing Prize

Hi there,

The submission deadline for this competition has just ended. Anyone else enter an essay? I’m interested in hearing about all your different experiences and thoughts, and later when the results come out, ideas on those.

Hey I entered the essay as well. It’s just April but I’m already super worried. I just want to know. Will I know if I’m not a finalist? They say on the website finalists will be notified blah blah blah, so if I don’t make it will I just be left waiting? I don’t know about you but I struggled to finish my essay. I guess it was my fault though because I thought I understood the work of art having discussed it before in the past, but messed up a section and had to do some last minute rewriting.

I submitted an essay too. My experience was pretty chill because my teacher made it a required assignment to write a rough and final draft, which he read over and provided feedback. This made gave us time to space out our brainstorming and writing time so that we didn’t have to stress out about writing everything on the deadline.

@CathJR @haerimkim I’m glad this contest is finally showing signs of living participants after months of silence LOL. Anyways, I’ve been getting more nervous by the day and just sent an email to the Collegeboard about whether they have already notified finalists. Don’t know if the people at CB HQ will know, but I’ll let you guys know if/when I hear back.

I had a pretty stressful but rewarding experience with this essay in the end (mostly because of my poor time management). I pushed myself pretty hard to produce the best possible essay.

By the way, what artworks did you guys write about, if you don’t mind sharing?

(Could someone who might have been notified as a finalist please tell us they were selected so we would stop worrying? LOL. I don’t think people who are not chosen will be contacted unfortunately.)

My friend applied B-)

Good luck to everyone!

@AsianStudent101 I wrote about the Garden of Earthly Delights by Bosch

@AsianStudent101 Did you ever end up hearing back from collegeboard?

Glad to see that I’m not the only one waiting anxiously to hear back. Does anyone know how many finalists they select?

@FukaEri I never heard back. @keyscape Last year they selected 6 finalists and one winner

I wrote about Las Dos Fridas, and at this point I don’t think anybody will hear back if they haven’t already. There’s just not enough time to do revisions and select a winner at this point as the site says.

@CathJR That’s if they are sticking to their schedule, but who knows how many applicants they had this time; they might not have even finished reviewing so it might be pushed back. I feel like they were not on schedule for even releasing the prompt this year, so maybe there is still hope. Just some optimistic thinking!

@CathJR @AsianStudent101 If I recall correctly, last year they announced the finalists mid-May, so they’d have had to contact them at least a week before that. They then announced the grand prize winner in June. I don’t know what timeline they gave last year, but I think it’s pretty likely that the finalists may not have been notified yet. So, if you’re confident you did the best you could on your essay I don’t think you should give up all hope just yet! A wise option would be to try to forget you even submitted anything at all, that way you’ll be surprised if it comes through and not as disappointed if it doesn’t.

@FukaEri Thank you that’s comforting. If I may ask, how did you know exactly when they announced the finalists? No list of finalist names shows up when I search for the 2015 finalists.

@AsianStudent101 so I just spent a few minutes going through threads from last year, and apparently they said that they’d notify finalists mid-May, and their official website was edited around a week after 15 May to say that information about the winners would be up soon.

Next year I hope they post a more realistic timeline as to not keep people guessing
