Hey sorry if Iam posting this in the wrong section. I was wondering what is the best book that helps one to prepare a strong application and write steller essays. I was looking at a book by Katherine Cohen from Ivywise and it seems like a great book, but i was wondering what some of you used.

good question, I'd also like answers to this.

acing the college application by michele hernandez

essays - On Writing the College Application Essay (Harry Bauld)

For Hernandez's book, make sure you get the revised book (publ. 8/28/07) for information about all the changes to the common app and other aspects of the application process.

I liked the "Harvard application essays" or something put out by Harvard Press.

Was pretty useful and really opened up my mind to the wide range of admissions essay possibilities out there.

orchidthief - dang, i got the copyright 2002 version. this one's old, huh?

kevster, the version you have is still fine, as it relates to writing essays. In the newer version there may be some different guidance from her on other aspects of the application, but we followed her advice in the '02 version, with great results.

The point is (for everyone), her "Acing" book covers both the approach to the application and the content of essays, so it's a two-fer.

The best book? College Confidential.

Hardworkers would bought the books recommended above, but smart ones would have asked random strangers who have read and re-read all the above books to correct their essay for them.

I recommend On Writing the College Application Essay by Harry Bauld. It was the most entertaining to read, and talks more indepth about writing than other books I've seen.

I'd like to second On Writing the College Application Essay. Excellent book.

Yeah, I loved the Harry Bauld one.

Is it good because it's actually useful, and insightful, or is it good because it's entertaining?

I'd rather have a dry and boring book that has the info I need than a humorous book with little less to say. If the former is the case, I am definitely getting this book then.

I found it to be both the former and the latter.

I liked it because it's helpful... plus it's funny. humor never hurts.
