The best Freshman dorm at BU is

Hey im going to move in next year and i would like to know also wich accommodation is the best. Im not really into this “freshman dorm” thing but to have a private bathroom (not obligatory for me) and a good room is the most important thing for me. I’m in cas and i can walk or take the bus 15 minutes each morning thats not a problem… could you guys give me some advise ?

If you don’t care for the “freshman dorm” thing, I think you should seriously consider Bay State Road. Big rooms in cool old row houses. You share a bathroom with maybe 4-6 others on your floor. Some have basement kitchens and I know at least one had a grand piano. You have to leave the building for food, but it is not a far walk. I’d also consider Shelton and Miles. I don’t know how hard it is to get into these places as a freshman.

West has been great for DD…she’s in the best shape of her life from being next to FitRec and anyone will tell you that the food at west is the best on campus. As one poster said, it’s not so bad to have communal bathrooms…never a wait, always clean, one less thing to negotiate. Haven’t heard a single complaint from dd.

Does anyone know how the Kilachand Honors College housing works? (location, room size, etc)

^ Same question as peacey; all I know is that the Kilachand Hall was Shelton Hall originally, and the food is good. Apparently Kilachand Honors Students are required to live there? Can anyone give some input about student life at that dorm (especially since sophomores/juniors also live there)?

Is 575 Commonwealth Avenue social and fun? I’ve heard that Warren Towers are the most social ones, and I’m really looking forward to that, but I like Commonwealth Avenue better, plus they have private bathrooms!! So should I go with 575 Commonwealth Avenue, or the Warren Towers?

Hi, I really want to be in 575 commonwealth avenue since it’s really close to the SMG building, plus it’s pretty close to some of the other buildings  and I really want a private bathroom.
By the way I’m an international student. Are there any particular dorms that international students usually get put into in BU or something?
any recommendations on which other dorms I should list in my 5 choices in the housing survey? thanks!

are there any quads or triples available in west for freshman?

For dorm choices, I would honestly recommend West or Warren. Having a private bathroom isn’t all that and the communal ones are cleaned 5 days/week. Warren and West offer the best social experiences for freshmen as everyone is looking to meet others/keep their doors open, etc. I lived in Warren freshman year and had a great time-I’m still really good friends with many of my floormates.

International students aren’t placed in a particular dorm.

There are triples available in west for freshmen, but I’m not sure why you’d want one-I lived in a quad freshman year and although I got along with my roommates, we were pretty cramped.

Hey there everyone,

Reading all the posts, Warren and West seems to be the best fit for freshmen’s. However, for me, I will be taking classes in the SMG. So West seems to be quite far away. Any comments on how 575 commonwealth avenue feels?

Thank You

I lived in 575 Comm Ave (Hojo) this past year, and I think it would be a huge mistake for anyone to live there as a freshman by choice. Due to the private nature of the rooms (no communal bathrooms, no common rooms, and few freshmen) there’s virtually no community there. I literally have only met maybe 2 or 3 people the whole year that I didn’t already know before hand that live in Hojo.

The private bathroom sounds nice, but in reality it just means you have to actually clean or live with a dirty bathroom, as well as worry about having to wait on your roommates.

The triples are also pretty damn small - It’s a little deceiving in that they look okay at first, but with 3 people in the room there’s just not enough space. My freshman year in a Warren double I actually had more room than in Hojo. Plus, since the beds are lofted, there’s not really any room for people to hang out, since they can’t sit on the beds. A few times we had to move to a different dorm because there just wasn’t room for the people in my room to hang out - something that never happened even in Warren.

Basically everything about Hojo conspires to make it anti-social and cramped.

/endrant

I definitely agree with shaedow. Choose Warren or West-if you’re worried about proximity, Warren is about a 3 minute walk away.

Hojo isn’t TERRIBLE, but Warren or West offer the best freshman experience.

I’m a BU grad and spent my freshman year living at Warren Towers. (I also ended up staying there sophmore year because I was able to get a single that year.) For me, it was a great experience, and some of my best memories are from the time I spent there. I arrived at BU not knowing a soul and met so many people in Warren Towers the first week before classes even started. Two of my best friends to this day are people that lived on the same floor as me there.

The things I liked best were…

-Centralized location…I only had to cross the street to get to most of my classes. On cold, windy days, this is a plus.

-Dining hall, laundry, etc. right in the building. Convenience store downstairs. You don’t ever have to leave, except to go to class. (Again, this is a nice option to have on cold days!)

-Had a awesome, river view from the top (18th) floor that I probably didn’t appreciate at the time as much as I should have.

-Not sure if they still have speciality floors, but back then, they had a pre-med floor, all girls’ floor, COM floor. Good for finding people with common interests/people you can study with.

The downsides are…

-Not the most luxurious accomodations. Not sure if the rooms have been updated, but back in the day, the rooms were nothing fancy and not big either.

-Community bathrooms (Those didn’t really bother me. I was happy I didn’t have to clean a bathroom like I would have had to if I were off campus.)

For the best on-campus, freshman experience, Warren Towers is a good way to go IMHO.
