"The Best of CC: Vol. I" ?

I'm confused. Did this thread merge with another? I found my earlier post on this one, but thought I'd posted on a thread started by a different OP just yesterday?

yes, the threads have been merged.

mini & Curmie

Such wonderful news. Congrats to both of your amazing Daughters (mini, you may never get D back on the west coast at this rate. I hope that all is well with E.)

They merged. Apparently, the whole is not quite as large as the sum of its parts, though. Curious.

I loved the story about the mom who went on "The Price is Right." When her son, who goes to CalTech, told her they picked her because she was pretty I got all teary-eyed.

Not a happy story but one that gets referenced every so often... the thread in which the young man defended his drinking habits and the safety measures he and his friends took while drinking and then the follow-up after he died from alcohol poisoning while visiting another college. I don't know the link, but someone else probably does.

I agree, corranged. That thread is absolutely tragic, but should be part of any Best of CC as it could make a life and death difference to someone.

corranged - that was Matt Pearlstone - "Lucifer11287" on here. There was an article in The Princetonian, among many other things.

oh my god, I just read that article. wow.

Wow, I'd never heard about that, though I was a regular on CC at the time and remember Matt's screen name.

Lucifer literally posted shortly before his passing if I remember right, and was telling us how he had under control and knew what he was doing. Such a waste. By all accounts a very good kid with a bright future.

Lucifer's posts...and the end result...have remained haunting. Not the type of case study I had in mind....but definitely one of the most memorable on CC.

Back to one of the more positive stories....my recollection is that either Mini's D or The Dad's D did not consider Smith their first choice...and had been disappointed when rejected from their first choice (Yale???) I don't bring this up to resurrect bad memories...only to point out how good outcomes can be even when they may not be viewed so postively, initially.

(Sorry I can't remember which D it is....Mini and the Dad are such Smith zealots....in a good way...that I sometimes get their D's confused!)

My d. had thought Williams was her first choice, and was accepted there with excellent financial aid (Smith had been near the bottom of her list) - that all changed after visits, when she discovered that, for the things she wanted, the academic quality at Smith was clearly superior, and that she had trouble after witnessing firsthand the level of alcohol use at my alma mater.

sadly his death also was sobering to the upperclassmen and woman at UVa who resupplied him with the hard liquor his young body had already become accustomed to..and those students were also punished. He was just hanging out there on a brief visit. Big lesson in a world where it is illegal to drink under the age of 21. He had a lot of raw talent and my heart goes out to his parents. He needed a serious intervention from those who knew him best, but it was easy to see that his achievements and talent masked the consequences and helped him avoid facing up to the risks that were building from his excessive drinking.

Digi's son is at Ohio University, not OSU, and doing spectacularly well. I have seen a number of his short films and they are very, very good. Plus OU has outstanding equipment for their students.

thanks tsdad!! My bad for the mix up

Thanks for posting this! As a newcomer I have lots to catch up on...especially after being gone for two weeks. ;) I have learned so much from this site!

Yes, I've learned that I can sit in a chair in front of a screen far longer than I would have suspected!

HA! Thanks for making me spew! I've also learned the same lesson!:)

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/parents-forum/15378-outcomes-after-ea-ed-rejection-last-year.html

This discussion of where kids ended up after being rejected/deferred on the EA round (in 2003) and their happiness factor as freshmen (in 2004) should give anyone hope who didn't make it through the EA round with desired results.

The thread I always liked but couldn't find was the "My Asian parents are crazy" thread. It was a HOOT!

O.K. Humor time. Easily offended? Then please don't read. I post this ever couple of years. I still laugh.

Unsuccessful Essay Topics

We have enough new posters and probably 4 times as many new lurkers so I thought it might be time to share some ideas of what not to write about on your free choice college essay.
These have been gathered by students and their views are not always PC or very refined so don't read any further if you are easily offended. A more complete list can be found here Worst Titles for College Essays! , but I urge you not to go as these are the mild ones (some have been edited by me), and most of the others are just stupid.
