Accoring to Facebook "The Bible" is one of the top ten books read at Duke University. Is Duke really this religious? Strict religion usually translates into conservatism....

well it's the most published book in the world.

so i wouldn't read too much into it.

compared to most other 'top' schools, duke does have lots of conservatives (i'm one). however, as you know, higher education quite literally translates to liberalism. i heard that there are about even numbers of liberals and conservatives. (i got this info. from current duke students)

They do have a world renowned divinity school....just because you choose religion as a profession doesn't necessarily equate conservatism.

Reading the Bible doesn't mean you have strong religious values... how can you truely understand christianity, and with it a large part of modern human history, without a decent understanding of its most important book.

Reading the Bible or Koran or whatever doesn't necessarily make you a believer in that faith... it gives you a much wider understanding and comprehension than you would have without it. If you are going to be agnostic it is still niave to just ignore the force or religion in the world... considering it is right up there with land and territory as some of the most important factors in domestic and world policy.

By the way, Duke being the most conservative among its peers means there's something like a (this is a personal estimate) 3:1 ratio Democrat to Republican.

Many Duke students are Christians, and they are active on campus - they also like the Bible. If it's something you want to be a part of, that's great. If not, that's fine, too. I think very few people would attempt to force their beliefs on to you at this university.

How intolerant and judgemental can you get? So what if the bible is one of the most listed books at Duke? That doesn't mean that there's "strict religion." And what's wrong with conservatism? Conservative viewpoints are just as healthy on college campuses as liberal ones...

You need to calm down cavalier! You should really watch your mouth and be careful about who you call "intolerant and judgemental." I was asking a question, and questions are asked in order to better come to a judgement. Think before you speak and please save us the pain of having to listen to your poser intellectual facade.

did you REALLY get into Harvard

First you show bewilderment that the Bible is a popular book at Duke. Then you draw the conclusion that Duke is extremely religious, and is, therefore, conservative. From the tone of your OP and some of your other posts, I gather that you find that bad. If you've even spent half as much time on CC as your post count would indicate, you would know that nearly every top university leans strongly to the left, and that Duke, a school that you are planning on attending, is no exception. In fact, as someone who is supposedly turning down the big H for Duke, I'd imagine that you would have thoroughly researched the matter. And who's being pained by my "poser intellectual facade"?? What exactly is a "poser intellectual facade"?? I didn't even know I had one.

I'm just going to assume that you're flame.

I did show bewilderment that the bible is LISTED as a popular book at Duke, because when compared to many other schools (including all those I applied to) it was the only one to have such a distinction. I was asking if it was so religious AS TO HAVE the bible listed in the top 10. And I said that religion USUALLY translates into conservatism.

What in GOD'S GREEN EARTH is a flame?

see: troll

That private message was quite elementary. Perhaps you would like to post it on the board. Or better yet, perhaps you should just explain yourself to the CC administrators when they see it.

Accionara, I didn't appreciate being messaged in malice. If you wish to "tell" on me to the "moderators," fine. I'm still assuming that you're a troll.

Messaged in malice? After you call me intolerant and judgemental. Besides I sent you the exact same message I posted on this wall.

And there was no purpose in your sending it to me. Quit being so thin-skinned.

I'm just going to put everyone out of their misery by ending this conversation. Perhaps you should start working on your vocabulary? Good luck in whatever you do. I really hope it doesn't involve trolls. Someone seems to have a sick fetish.

....chill people. it's simply a question. and all you need to do is 'answer'.

btw cavalier302, it seems that you find it hard to believe people actually put down the big H for the D. there are some, including one of my friend and probably accionara too. so chill.
