The Canadian Thread

Dead_crocodile,

You are right that joining mundane clubs or playing random sports/instruments will have little impacts on your EC profile. Now, ask yourself, "what am I interested in? what is my 'hidden' passion outside of classroom that's never really been uncovered?" ECs are a tricky thing to do, and it depends greatly on your ability to fully realize and utilize all the available resources around you. In a big city like Vancouver, I'm sure you'd be able to find something to develop your passion on. And most importantly, your EC criteria should be based on three golden rules: FOCUS, COMMITMENT, & PASSION (most important of the three).

And why was the girl rejected from Columbia ED? It's because she lacks all of the above three golden qualities in her ECs. Even though she is considered the "average outstanding student" (meaning stellar grades, SATs, etc), she ultimately lacks that individuality and personal quality schools like Columbia seeks. Good luck:)

If you mean me, it's actually because of an incomplete application: no SAT II's, no counselor's report, one missing rec and one one REALLY late rec...I think that's why I was rejected at least. I applied to Columbia on a whim as they had sent me an application. Who knows, maybe I lacked the 'individuality' and 'personal qualities' that Columbia soughts as well and was thus rejected...

congrats cynicalbliss :)

chenchen where do you live? I don't think it's you because this kid i was referring to is a friend of mine in victoria BC (unless you live there as well...oh what a coincidence then:))

No, I'm not from Vancouver. I just thought you meant me as I was also rejected Columbia ED.

thx 4 all ur help guys, how do u think my chances are at ucb, ucla, usc, and nyu stern are? <33

ah 1 week left!!

McGill vs Queens..where should I go?

I have been accepted to both McGill and Queens in Canada. For Queens it's a special first year in England program. I don't know where to go, possible majors I 'm considering:
Econ
International Relations
Law ( later on)

also take into consideration that I value the professor/student interaction, student body diversity, the MUN clubs, how the library is ( my fav place in the world ), and study abroad options. Name recognition is somewhat important and I might return to Asia ( maybe Hong Kong) after graduation.

Thanks!

both are fine I think, though Queen's has been experiencing much resource/class shortages in the past few years because of limited funding. I'd say go for Mcgill because it's in a more diverse, culturally open/stimulating environment.

Wait, didn't you say that you are going to an American school?

IMHO Queens business is the only program better than that of McGill.
McGill has better name recognition, better surroundings (if not quite as beautiful as Queens).

i hear that Queens has an awful atmosphere on campus too

I've applied to some Canadian unis, and I'm wondering what sort of offers they make? Is it like the American unis where all you have to do is basically pass after you've gotten an offer, or is it like in the UK where they give conditional offers and you have to meet a minimum score to get in?
Because I saw on another message board that a guy got offers from both McGill Commerce and Waterloo where they only required him to get the IB diploma. Are the conditions generally this low?

Well, you're usually accepted if your test scores/grades are already high enough, then the only requirement (once you're "Accepted pending final results") is to get your diploma (it is implied that your grades shouldn't drop dramatically). I don't see how that makes the conditions "low"...

Relatively low compared to for instance Oxbridge who will require you to get 38+ points on the diploma. :)

"Wait, didn't you say that you are going to an American school?"
I applied to both Canadian and US schools, still waiting on some decisions from US schools but probably still going to go to Canadian schools unless I get good $ ( which is pretty hard).

Hi happyjanecheung, where do you think I should go,
