The Commons Housing

Hey out of the 3 (Kruger, Dunn, and Ashton)that are there (excluding Mosher cuz i would be a chemistry major) are all of the dorms there predominantly for freshman?

All 4 are available to who ever wishes to apply for housing there. As students get older, the trend is to move off campus though for various reasons. So, upperclassmen generally don't live there unless they are RA's.

With that said, I'd say a good 75-90% of the students who live in the commons are freshman. The rest are probably sophomores, and you may find a rare junior here or there. That is discluding RA's. One of my friends this year lives in Dunn, and he's a sophomore. When I lived in Krueger my freshman year, one of my friends directly across the hall was a sophomore as well.

Really? I thought that because Mosher Engineering was about building an educational community for engineers that it was exclusively for engineers.

It is, and I just realized I said all 4...I meant all 3. And you have to realize how many freshman engineering majors there are. I'd say if you have an incoming freshman class of say 9000, ~2500+ are likely engineers. There is no way Mosher can hold that many students... and that's just freshman. Granted many of those will drop out or get kicked out of engineering within 2 semesters, it's still a reality. And for engineering majors like myself, there are just many more perks to living off campus. I'm a sophomore, and none of my engineering friends that are my age live in Mosher with the exception of a few.

Care to explain?

Sure.

Off campus benefits (generally): Kitchen, more room, more freedom (w/o hassle of RAs), can have pet(s), often times is cheaper than on-campus living when splitting with others, free access to amenities such as a pool or workout room (all paying students do get in free to the Rec though), don't have to move out for extended holidays like winter break

On campus benefits: Believe it or not... better basic cable package for tv, free electricity, close to classes/don't have to take the bus, easier to make friends IMHO.

Yeah Im just worried about parking if I live off campus.

Q1) Do most soph still stay on campus? Is there do, mostly where for Engineering student?
Q2) Do most honor student stay in Clement Hall if one able to maintain the GPR?
Q3) How much saving off campus vs on campus? Where are the better location off campus which is safe, clean and not too old.
Q4) Do most off campus student has car for commute or take bus?

I lived in Dunn hall for 2 years. it was ok, but I felt the community on Northside was a lot stronger and more sociable. Dunn is going co-ed by suite next year though, which should help with the social aspect.

ucla011,

Q1) Do most soph still stay on campus? Is there do, mostly where for Engineering student?

The majority don't, but there are plenty that syill do. I did, and I don't regret it. I didn;t find my social circle until sophmore year, and didnt want to move off campus before making a lot of friends.

Q2) Do most honor student stay in Clement Hall if one able to maintain the GPR?

I think lechner is the big honors hall

Q3) How much saving off campus vs on campus? Where are the better location off campus which is safe, clean and not too old.

I live at the heights, and its slightly more than on campus, but its way nicer, and I end up saving a ton of money on food since I have a kitchen and dont have to pay for overpriced cafateria food

Q4) Do most off campus student has car for commute or take bus?

Most of us have cars, because the public transportation here sucks. its fine for getting to campus, but its very limited in terms of getting to the grocery store/pharmacy, getting places on nights/weekends, etc.

Vyse,
Thanks for the information. Lechner is only for Freshman Honor. It appears another hall McFadden has been added as well for Freshman Honor. Clements is oepn to all other classificiation of Honors.

Can somebody post and rank some off campus housing web sites that is "SAFE, clean and not too old"? We will be helping our son to move out May. We are OOS, and will like to visit some of this housing while in town.

What is the difference between Off campus housing and University Apartment? Which one is better base on commute convenience and price and other amenities?

Does anyone know what Mosher engineering is like to live in? Being in engineering, I know I'll take my studying serious but I want to live some place where people like to socialize and have fun at the right times. I'm curious if the people living in Mosher just constantly study and not into socializing too much.

That's what I'm kind of worried about Berkman (He kicks ass). I'm hoping there's a population that is balanced between the two.

DP

Chaos, did you put Mosher as your first choice?

Yup.
