So, I now that I've been accepted, I'm going to apply for on campus dorms.

I'm highly considering the commons for a few reasons:
1. I actually like that they're smaller.
2. Since I'll be a transfer (new to everything and everyone), I kinda wanna be somewhere social and meet a lot of people.
3. I've got other reason that just slipped my mine, sorry.

The modular style is the second style that I'm looking at. But honestly, I don't know much about any of the dorms. So, what do y'all think about the Commons? Modular style?

I live in a modular on South side (Appelt), since it’s bigger all of my friends that do live in the commons hang out in my room. Basically the modular dorms that are close enough to the commons to not even really make a difference are Appelt (Male only), Underwood, Wells, Eppright, and Rudder is right there too but I’m not sure if it’s modular or not.

If you like that the dorms are smaller I would go with the commons, and the commons seem to be a lot more social and stuff than my modular dorm. That may be due to my dorm being all male and no one really being as interactive as a result though.

Ah, yeah I have a friend in Appelt right now. And that seems like opposite for him. He’s always hanging out at the Commons.

I’m just finding this a harder decision than I expected. Not like I’ll have much of a say anyways, since I’m just a transfer. I might just have to take what I get…

My son is in the Commons. His first choice was Mosher, but was assigned to Dunn. Considering when he was finally admitted (he’s a transfer) the dorms were full and they were not taking any more names for the waiting list he’s lucky to have gotten on-campus. They eventually reopened housing for male applicants only in early August and he received his assignment. He chose the Commons area for the same reasons you are considering it -wanting to meet/socialize with new people. He seems to be pretty happy with his decision. While he gets along with his roommate, he’s better friends with his suitemates. A word of advice since you’re a transfer as well - I recommend attending Transfer/Howdy camp. My son went and loved it. Made a lot new friends and learned about the traditions of TAMU.

TexaCo Mom,

That is so bizarre. My son accepted last March, had Commons as his 3rd choice, but was assigned to Appelt. We wanted him to be on the Northside, so he changed to a private dorm, but wonder why they didn’t put him in the Commons?

Bad timing I guess.

TexaCo Mom- Thanks! I’m definitely planning on going to Howdy camp. That was one thing I thought I wouldn’t be able to do, and I was thrilled when I saw that they had a camp for us! I actually know a guy in Dunn, and he seems to like it. Are the rooms pretty nice? That’s one thing I haven’t been sure about.

I think I’ll put the commons as a second choice, because I really do want to stay on the South side, and either be commons or modular style. I’m a social person, but not “North side” social. If that makes sense at all.

why do they only reopen housing for guys?

So being a transfer, and putting two common dorms as my first two choice, is it pretty likely that I’ll get into them?

Houndstooth - They reopened housing to male applicants because they had (male) rooms become available after they went through the process of seeing who was accepting their offers of admission and those applicants who later changed their minds.

Winypooh - I don’t know the answer to that, but don’t delay getting your housing app in. It was a bit of a nail-biter not knowing whether my son was going to be able to get on-campus housing or if we needed to start considering off-campus up until about a week or two before classes started.

I would suggest Northside because of the food. The Commons has the food court, but it kinda gets old. Southside also has Duncan, but that’s where the corps eats.

Northside has Sbisa, it’s also close to Northgate and all of those restaurants.

That’s true, the first week on campus when we wanted to go to sbisa it would take us like 10-15 minutes because we would go straight up Spence St. and then straight across. Once we started walking through academic plaza though it never has really taken more than 5 minutes so it’s not too bad.

Yeah, I guess food isn’t too much of an issue for me. North side seems a little too much for me. I have a friend down there that said South side would fit my personality best anyways.

So I applied last week to the commons and Eppright.

Is that pretty early to have applied? I’m wondering if I have a pretty good chance of getting on campus, or if I should start looking at private dorms… Which I’d rather not do.

I think you are pleanty early to get your choice of dorm
