The Courtyards Appartments

Hi all,

I will be coming in as an international graduate student in August, 09. Does anyone know about the new Canopy apartments (it looks comparable in amenities to the University House, and cheaper)? Also, how conducive do you think the university house would be in terms of quietness, etc? Are there other suggestions for good apartments close to the University of Florida?

Thanks.

The courtyards are not a luxury apartment. They are probably overpriced (like most if not all apartments near campus). But, you are right across the street from campus. If you are taking courses in Norman hall, you can literally roll out of bed, walk 2 minutes and your in class. The roofs leak when their are hurricanes (which has been rare the last few years). The management is mediocre. And there are tons of parties. There are no perfect Apartments or complexes. Don't buy into the idea that its going to be like the Real World or something else you've seen on MTV. If you're going to be a freshman, live on campus one year and then move off campus.

I've driven by the Canopy apartments and they look pretty nice as far as I can tell, but they are still in the process of being built. I'm sure they'll be done by August, but you would have to sign a lease there without knowing what it's going to look like, which would be kind of scary for me, even though there probably won't be anything wrong seeing as it's brand new.

I would also suggest looking at the Woodlands. It's only about a year old and looked extremely nice when I took a tour. I think it costs the same as Canopy, which is a little pricy but if you can afford it, then you get what you pay for. I've heard that the Estates are also nice, and slightly cheaper than Woodlands/Canopy.

If you wouldn't mind living a little further away from campus, I'd also look at Campus Lodge. The furniture it comes with is pretty ugly, but other than that it's a good deal. My friend lives there and she and her roommate both love it.

Does anyone have any opinion of “The Ivy House”?

Try Jefferson Second.

I recall a year or two ago someone posted something about the Ivy House. I had heard that it was very nice and it is on the sorority row bus route (a bonus). Just do a search of Ivy House on the UF Forum and the old threads should pop up.

Shelby - I found an old review/quote about the Ivy House (it is two years old).

Hope this helps!

When my D was admitted for Spring term and was going to start at Santa Fe in the Fall for one semester, we were told by the time she found out whether the change to Summer would be granted, there would be no Fall housing available. So we went looking for off campus housing. After reading all the input from this forum we narrowed down our visits to Ivy House, Windsor Hall, The Estates, University House and Jefferson Second.

Pricewise they were all competitive, and cheaper than the dorms and within walking distance to campus except for The Estates (so we ruled that out). We liked Jefferson Second and University House because of the 4/4s and never having to share a bath or bedroom which would have been the case at Ivy and Windsor. We ended up choosing Jefferson Second. Since we signed our lease, they have lowered the prices from around $550 to $435 utilities and parking included. They would not, however, give us the lower rate even though D had not moved in yet.

Ivy and Windsor are very much like dorms with the shared kitchen and baths. If that’s what you’re looking for, they are very nice when compared to the dorms.

I hope this helps. D is living at Jefferson now, so if you have any questions, just let me know.
