So after reading a whole bunch of these like...I got rejected from UCLA...or Cal...or even Santa Barbara threads...Imma tell yall wats up at UCSD...

I guess I should just give a quick background...I'm currently a first year at UCSD...Marshall College...(the best one!=])...Political Science and Ethnic Studies Major...I work at OASIS at UCSD...and I'm committed to two orgs...

First of all, yes...a lot of the times UCSD is seen as a back up school for a lot of the other UCs...I'm not arguing that...

What I feel new students and potential students need to know is that UCSD DOES have a life of its own. It DOES have orgs, events, a PARTY SCENE, and its just a chiil out place...

The number one thing I would recommend is getting involved. It doesn't matter if it is just one org or event, GET INVOLVED. It is at these events and org meetings that I feel you will find some of your closest friends because these are people that are coming together for a common cause. You will find a lot of things in common with each other. I know that this is where I met most of my friends...!!! There are places like the LGBTQ Center, the Women's Center, the Cross Cultural Center, the Frats and Sorities...and a lot more...

Second...so SD is in La Jolla which is not really San Diego...but theres the bus! Plus...at the beginning of the year there are a lot of little field trips that take you all around San Diego. Get to know the city...cuz if you don't then you truly are missing out. San Diego is beautiful! And theres so much going on...Since I've been here I've been to so many spoken word events int he city, art shows, community events. And I've met some really down, cool people that I talked politics with...just really interesting people...

Third...MEXICO! Dude...TJ is the best! I mean...the club scene is amazing!...too much! you have to experience it for yourself....haha...leave it to the imagination...

and I guess this goes for any school that yo go to...it all depends on wat you make of it...just don't expect a party to land on your lap...you know what I'm saying?....be the change you want to see...

Mar_ev - My son got into Marshall also. He finally made the decision last night to send in his SIR. He wants to study bio and finally decided that it was a better opportunity for him than Davis (After speaking to numerous doctor friends etc..!) Anyway we were mostly concerned about having somewhat of a social life. he's very athletic, into tennis, ultimate fresbee etc.. and he needs this physical release to keep sane. How close is Marshall to the tennis courts, do people every go out on the lawn and toss around a fresbee? Or is it study study all the time?? Also, do you recommend joining a fraternity? How demanding of time are they if you do? Thanks for your post and answers!

I'm in Warren, and we have a little lawn here + volleyball courts. I believe the lawn in Marshall is larger, so if I see people outside on the lawn in Warren playing frisbee, football, soccer, volleyball, rabbit chasing, etc, I'd imagine that there are people who go out in Marshall. RIMAC also offers plenty of recreational activies.

One of my roommates joined a co-ed fraternity that was very time demanding for rush, but I don't know if others are the same. I'd recommend your son to take his time to explore different fraternities; he doesn't have to join his first quarter.

there are TONS of things to do... people just need to open their eyes and not be shy!!

seriously in such a big university you cant have everything expected to be handed to you...if you see a club on library walk that sounds interesting just go and talk to the people there!!

rushing is always a big time commitment so people usually plan around it and take less classes/ easier classes

and there are tennis courts all over ucsd
and people just football/ throw balls/ play fresbee all the time from the area near their college or on sun god lawn or library walk or the area near price center

but these things shouldnt be a problem
im so sick of hearing about how ucsd is socially dead -.-

lots of good points up there.. but i have to add.. try to get a car after your 1st or 2nd year so you can get off campus - there's a ton of fun stuff you can do in san diego, but it's beyond walking distance. like.. padres and chargers games, pacific beach on thursday nights (once you're 21), sea world, paintballing, downtown SD.. the list goes on.

Basically, UCSD is in a surburban location different from Berkeley/UCLA in the city environment. La Jolla is a warm place for old, rich, conservative folks. That is why we don't have a frat row.

No frat row, no football team means you have to find other alternative ways to have the typical college social life. It is up to YOU to find it.

P.S.- If anything, there is always San Diego State, top10 playboy party school in the nation.
