About the "social" aspects of UCSD

I most definitely look forward to visiting UCSD, it may very well be the school I attend this fall. But I'm sure some of you have heard at one point or another that UCSD's social life is somewhat "dull..." People say parties aren't held on campus and all, and that doesn't really concern me personally. But to the current students, the school isn't as dull as some people make it out to be, right? I figure that those that say it's dull are exaggerating to some extent, and I'm not saying that the school being socially dry is true by any means as I have not been there yet. But to those that are in attendance at UCSD, do you think that UCSD isn't a very fun school to go to?

(again please don't mistake me for insulting this school or its students. I want to go here actually. Just want to clear up some of these "rumors" about the school before I actually visit it myself :D)

College is honestly what you make out of it. If you want to party go and party. It’s not like UCSD is the one college where absolutely no one does drugs or drink. It also depends on your priorities, I know many people who choose not go out and party everyday because they are focused into getting graduate/professional school. If you really want to party I suggest checking out the Greek system or joining one, cause they have parties quite frequently.

Well actually I don’t party much myself. lol I guess that’s what people are referring to when they might think a college is dull or something.

Join a few clubs and you won’t have to worry about running out of social events. Plus if you’re over 21 free beer once or twice a qtr at Bear Gardens or something.

Go out and meet people! Join the greek system. it makes partying easy.

oh yea and how are the intramural sports? I’ve read they’re great at UCSD

Thats true, I would say. I played intramural flag football last quarter, and it was fun. They have a lot of different teams.

People ditch me to go to parties, so I have come to the conclusion that parties happen here.

There’s a lot to do on campus. Just make some friends and actively search. Thats what I’ve done and I’ve made some of the coolest friends ever

I think people say it’s dead simply because there’s a lot of bio majors here that are only concerned with getting to grad school. But honestly, any college is what you make it. Don’t expect people to randomly invite you to a party while walking to class (well, except for rush week for greek stuff). If you go out and meet people, you’ll meet people & have a pretty good social life.

UCSD has something for everyone. If you want to study and have quiet time you can do that. If you want to party and get drunk you can do that too. It just depends what you want and who you hang out with.

How’s the school spirit and the general morale of UCSD? Is everyone excited to be there or just living life or just being lukewarm about everything?

Don’t expect things to come to you. Be proactive and you’ll have a great social life.

As for school spirit… There’s not too much of that here. In fact, it’s rather common for students to disparage UCSD (usually facetiously) by saying things like “She’s pretty hot for a UCSD girl” or “Did you just use a bio pick-up line? You SO go to UCSD.” However, most of us are pretty proud of our school… You just won’t see too many people going to sporting events.

If your only concern to is to crazy at football and basketball games, this is not the place to go. That’s the one thing I say we’re lacking on the social side.

What are some of the bigger clubs on campus?

@xpolly

There are a lot of clubs for almost every different asian ethnicity you can think of: VSA, TASA, KASA, etc… there’s some big clubs for religious people such as intervarsity. If you’re not asian or religious, there are community service clubs (Circle K) or pre-med clubs (AMSA, MED). There’s also the surfing club, which is pretty big and has parties.

if it really gets that dull, go to SDSU on friday and saturday nights. you will be fine. haha
