I adore this thread…the descriptions of Indian parties are so true! Don’t forget the forty-five minute goodbyes.
Anyways, I’m a rising senior, hailing from Tamil Nadu. Nice to meet you all (and finally fit in somewhere!!!)

Omg the goodbyes take FOREVER lol. My nondesi friends always wanna go to one of my indian parties but its too embarrassing haha. O im gonna be a freshman at Duke, c ya later high school!!

poor fascination. you may come out of lurking and post in this thread :)

goodbyes are funny. my parents tell us it’s time to go and I either end of walking around outside for a bit (peaceful really) or my parents just call me again a few times over the course of which they are still saying goodbye. haha, the do take long. gotta feel the love :)

Same here. My parents take like a half hour and make me hug every auntie, uncle, and cousin. I give them the one arm hug thing just to make it go by faster lol

Haha, I’m a rising senior too! And even though I’m (almost) 17, I still get my cheeks pinched and get the whole, “Wow, you’ve gotten so much older!” thing. Hooray for my life.

And let’s not forget eating at restaurants. Even after we all finish eating, we end up sitting around the table for about two hours, about 12 people hogging the restaurant and talking about nothing. And there’s always the side discussions my mom has about me with the other aunties even though I’m like 2 feet away. LOL.

I’m so glad this thread is going on. It’s hilarious. I’m glad there are people out there who can actually relate to me!

@oiseaux That was kinda rude… I think most of us on here are Indians living in the U.S. but even if someone is on here from India, how are we being standoffish if we’re all talking about common experiences we go through as part of our culture? And atleast for the people I’m friends with, we use the term brown for south asians. And nothing’s wrong with being associated with Hispanics, we get that all the time :P

Oh, and if I’m not awkwardly in a corner/trying to make conversation with someone my age/avoiding relatives I’ve never met before, I’m usually the one who plays with all the little kids. Which usually ends up being really embarrassing or really fun. Or both.

And yay all the class of 2013 kids on here :)

Let’s face it, food is the main reason we go for brown parties most of the time except I feel like Indian desserts are a disappointment sometime… How much trifle and kheer can a person eat?? Hahaha.

@twentythirteen: that oiseaux guy was pretty random. I was just like…okay? Haha.
And yep, food is the primary reason I attend parties. But I never eat gulab jamun. Because only my mom makes good gulab jamun.

…how desi do I sound right now? Holy crap.

Haha yeah and they just made their account today… Weird.

Anyone been to Devon Streeeet in Chicago?! Lol I love/hate that place.

I LOVE Chicago! We went there last year for an Indian wedding, it was insanely fun. I totally wanna move there/go to college there someday. But I don’t know what Devon Street is haha. Some Indian restaurant? California problems…

Haha it’s a street filled with Indian restaurants, grocery stores, and extremely overpriced clothing stores. Filled with Indians. Horrible traffic. Paan spit stained sidewalks. Sketchy location. Kinda smelly. But the food is so freaking delicious. Like hands down the best Indian food ever. That’s why my family is always super excited about chitown weddings. The food is always catered from there :)

OHHHH I think I remember hearing about that! We were supposed to go, but we ran out of time. We have something like that here in SoCal too! I don’t know if you’ve heard of it, but people call it Cerritos/Artesia/Little India. Super sketchy as well but it has awesome food and an Indian movie theater! :)

Random question but have you ever been to the Little India in Singapore? We stopped there once for 18 hrs on our way to India and saw Singapore. Super pretty!

No I haven’t the only other “Little India” place I’ve been to was Gerard Street in Toronto. It was really nice. Like tourists were there. I was impressed. My parents went to a similar street in London but I don’t remember what it was called.

I’ve been to Little India in Singapore!! Haha, I swear, I’ve been hoping to see a thread like this forever! Telugu girl here, freshman at UCD (yaaaay, satisfied the desi parent requirement and whoa, would you look at that, hoping to be a doctor too even MORE stereotypical :D

Well I am a hydeabadi and let me tell you how annoying it gets when each day you wake up to ur mom screaming at u and comparing u to every single kid in the world. I seriously wish I wasn’t the only child. ■■■.

Sent from my HTC PH39100 using CC

Whoohoo! Telugu pride Congrats on UCD! I wanna go there too! And yeah, isn’t it gorgeous?
The London one sounds amazing, I totally wanna visit there one day too!
And vampyfreak, I think we’re all in that situation, myself included except for the fact that I’m being compared to my older sister. It’s seriously like comparing apples and oranges but my parents refuse to accept that It’s okay, we’re here to empathize with each other :)

Being the older one = example for the younger bros. Muahahah

Whenever I go to a brown party all the aunties are all like “Don’t your parents feed you anything…etc.” and I’m just like “yeah…”.

Or they’ll be like “when are you going to stop growing. We won’t be able to find a boy tall enough for you…etc.” and that’s when I start bending my knees and try to make myself shorter so they’ll stop talking about me. -.-

Gosh, aunties are really annoying.
