How important is the midyear report? Let's say we have a student, we'll call her Jane. If Jane is a straight A student, applying to top notch schools, how bad will it hurt jane if she gets a C in an AP class, which by the way nearly everyone in her class is also failing? Will it ruin her chances at these schools, if this is the only C on her midyear report, and the rest are A's??

If nearly everyone in her class is failing, then I would have her ask her counselor to mention that, and give some reason for it. A C in a class full of Fs shows that she is not slacking off, but unless that is mentioned, it will hurt her chances.

Is she applying EA or RD?

I think a B will be okay but a C will hurt. It's only Nov, she has plenty of time to bring it up!

They expect you to be successful in the hardest classes (it will only get harder at Stanford)
