The Dual Enrollment Club

Anyone going for an associate’s before HS graduation?

I’m trying for an associate’s in mathematics and maybe applied physics. Does anyone know how an associate’s degree impacts college admissions?

I will have almost 50 DE credits from a local community college when I graduate this spring from high school. All in all, I have to say I have had an amazing experience being in DE since the start of my somphmore year of high school. It has been very interesting be on a college campus even though it is only a small community college campus and I know universities are much larger.Meeting students from other high schools who are also in dual enrollment has been very interesting and I have no regrets doing DE over taking AP courses at this point.

Though my school doesn’t offer many AP’s I know AP English and Biology are there. AP calc got dropped because not enough students (I’m honors pre calc) no physics. There may be an AP history I’m unsure.

Welp school at my main campus is cancelled. I only had one class today but its nice to not make the giant commute for just one class. Somehow I’m way more awake than I was before I got the text tho lol

Did school or class get cancelled?

Does doing dual Enrollment at the school you’re applying to give you an advantage? For example, my #1 is UF, and I’m currently dual enrolled and taking 2 classes through them, 1 last Fall.

I seriously have no idea. I’d like to say yes but I don’t have the numbers or personal experience to back it up. I’d think that if you get strong recommendations from your DE teachers that it will look better.

@JadeRock Did you get your teacher recommendations from your DE teachers and if so, how hard was it? I’m sort of stressing over the recommendations because the teachers will have me for one semester and I’m not super social to chat the teachers up and most teachers don’t have the time to be chatted to outside of office hours.

I think it did for my son, @JPGator98, though I don’t know that UF would agree. I think it helped especially to show his math aptitude (took Precalc and Calc 1).

Getting a solid recommendation from a DE teach is difficult. It’s hard to really get to know a teach in just a semester, and you should keep up with them if you want one. Going to office hours during the school year with questions is probably the best way to get to know them. Catching up a couple times a semester will make them more likely to give you a good one.

Is taking 3 DE classes too much? I am thinking of taking Sociology on Monday nights from 6-8, Macro Economics on Wednesdays from 6-8, and English Composition on Thursday nights from 6-8? Too much?

Thanks for the advice. On the other hand I’m quite sure I’ll be able to get a good recommendation from my councilor as he encourages us to bother him all the time. In regular high school I somehow never managed to meet my councilor because she was too busy.

I’m thinking that maybe I’ll try to connect with my astronomy teacher from last semester as he teaches advanced physics. The problem is I’ll be taking those courses in the last semester of Senior year and he mentioned that he’s considering a sabbatical. I also feel slightly guilty about his class because I slacked off as he had a super lenient grading curve. Despite having shifted the grading scale down one letter so a regular B=A, C=B, and so, the average grade is supposed to be a C. I got an A with absolute minimal effort… Come to think about it, that may be because I actually showed up to class unlike everybody else.

@kitkat01 Wow… you’re heavy on evening classes. Our DE program has a limit of 11 units per semester which is the most annoying number. I don’t think it’s too heavy because I took four classes last semester. Granted, one was Karate and the other a half-credit. What irked me was that I spent almost as much time on my half-credit class as my 5 unit math class. I managed to make it work out with my two high school classes.

Do you still have time to do homework? <<<That’s the important question. Look up the professors and try to see how much HW or studying the class requires.

@kitkat01 are those courses on top of your high school courses or in lieu of them?

If they’re on top, yes that’s too many. Depending on the class, I average 2-3 hours of homework a week (which is VERY little compared to my peers).

You only have so many hours in the day…

@PulseStar Remember to get two teacher recommendations. I never saw any schools that require more than that. It is great you have a good counselor recommendation lined up because every college on the Common App requires one.

Are you referring to your college counselor or high school one?

@PulseStar school

A general trend I see is one from humanities and one from the STEM fields. Unfortunately humanities are my weak spot and I’m quite sure I’ll never be able to impress an English teacher. The only reason I’m decent at history is my ability to recall seemingly unrelated facts that somehow do relate from years ago. I also like reading biographies/autobiographies. That means I’ll need to get a recommendation from my History teacher, a woman who is nice but incompetent at teaching. I almost learned nothing.

I’m hoping my college counselor will be allowed to write the letter because he’s only there for DE students and very involved. Our high school counselor for DE is a bit more busy and doesn’t have an office on campus. Her only job is to make sure we graduate high school. Our college counselor gets to help us with choosing colleges and figuring out pretty much anything related to planning ahead.

*Just noticed I’ve been swapping counselor with the c version, which wasn’t what I meant at all. Please excuse me for mixing those two up.

If the “college counselor” works for your high school sure, but if not, you high school counselor will handle the mandatory student evaluations and comments for common app.

There is a spot for other recommendations on common app you could put the DE counselor’s recommendation down on. I personally put my principal and employer down under that section.

I’ve absolutely no idea who our college counselor works for. Fortunately our DE staff love to talk with each other, so I’d hope that information will spread. With such a small group, the staff has a pretty good idea what you want to do even when it isn’t their job. I’m still debating whether my employer would add anything meaningful but his recommendation may make up for my weak extracurriculars.

Yeah thats 3 DE classes on top of 4 HS classes. I studied abroad for the fall semester so I am taking all 4x4 classes this spring. Honors Chemistry, Honors Advance Functions and Modeling, Honors English 3, and maybe photography. I am not sure if taking all 4x4 will be easier or harder than a normal schedule but I would like to build up some college credits. Taking English Composition at CC will open up a lot of other class options to take senior year as well since it is a pre requisite.

@PulseStar

I don’t think it makes much of a difference haveing an associates…it is really about how well you did in the classes. Also you should find out from prospective colleges how many of those credits will transfer before you decide which college to attend. Most likely your state school will transfer the most.
