The FINAL COMMENT on stats for getting in

I realize it is unlikely this will end the spamming of admin. stats/chance requests, but here is my take on the stats (I’m very involved in the Brown community, know several admis. officers, but am not one myself):

There are two sorts. First, they do an initial “swipe” where they take out every1 below a certain GPA/SAT level. These can differ from year to year, area to area, but I think if you generally have a 3.5+ with hard classes (multiple APs if offered at your school) and above a 650 you will make it through this sort. Also, being an athlete/legacy/George Bush helps you through this sort.

The second is an analysis of your application for admission. They give you a 1-5 score for academics (5 being highest) and a 1-5 score for personality/character. The better you do on these two combined, the higher your chances of getting in.

The most important thing is consistency, and for you to show the office that not only do you have a a clear view of who you are and where you want to go, but it is consistent with how you have chosen to spend your highschool, and is something that Brown believes it can help you achieve.

No one is a shoe-in. It’s always a craps-shoot but perhaps this gives you a better idea.

Remember, academics and extracurriculars are important, but consistency (especially consistent excellence… sucking at both football and math isn’t exactly going to help) is key.

Thanks for that post. Except -- George Bush at Brown? Hahaha

do u think brown will take obstacles overcome into account??? cuz my grades aren't really consistent (3.85 Freshmen year,3.33 sophmore & half of junior, 4.0 junion & senior UW), but it's cuz of some stuff i had to deal with at the time! my SAT/ACT scores have a similar pattern!!! ... now i'm really nervous...

Could you have your guidance counselor explain your situation in their rec? I have a similar situation and that's what I did.
Orange mocha frappucinos sound really gross.

lol.. yah.. i got my sn from the movie zoolander, when he gets all depressed & his model friends are like " i know what'll make u feel better ... ORANGE MOCHA FRAPPUCINOS!!!"

I highly highly highly doubt that Brown or any school for that matter will automatically not consider your application if you don't have at least a 650 on a section....even if you're not an athlete, URM, legacy, or the guy who found the cure for cancer....that's ridculous.

If you have an average of below 650, I think your chances of being considered by an ivy league school without amazing grades/athletics/alum pull/extenuating circumstances are slim at best.

Test scores are rather more important than most admissions officers will tell you, and having an AVERAGE of below 650 doesn't sound (to me) like the kind of person who will get into Brown/Princeton/Yale/Harvard/Any other ivy.

I'm sure others may disagree. Anyone?

I totally agree w/Brunonian!!!

This was my immediate theory of college admissions. Thank you for ur verification! Except, I think for MIT it's 680 SAT than 650 for brown...well, it varies among schools!

Thank you for helping me fill in the rest. I knew how they eliminated most of the application pool (through test scores) but didn't have a clue as to what kind of a "point" system the adcom uses to complete their processes. And of course, it's going to vary from school to school.

And I agree, there is NO such thing as a shoe-in; when the president of princeton's daughter was applying to college, she was denied admission to princeton.

Thanks again, Brunonian!
