The hardest book you have had the (dis)pleasure of reading?

I hated The Sun Also Rises. All they did was get drunk, sleep around, watch a bullfight and get drunk again.

As I Lay Dying was awfull not too hard but by far the worst book i have ever read :(

Oh yeah and The Scarlet Letter was also terible

"Catcher in the Rye" was pretty hard for me to read. Not terrible, but at some points I just got tired of the narration and wanted to quit.

Red Badge of Courage.
I hate realism.
Some idiot who runs around like a chicken with his head cut off for an entire book. No plot, no sequence, no developed characters. Utter garbage.

AND GOOD GOD.
The Scarlet Letter.
I hate you Hawthorne.
We all know why.

Hmmm.

Heart Of Darkness.

Always Had to read the same lines over 3 times to actually let it sink into my mind. Even after that, I didn't understand what the sentence meant.

Jane Eyre and One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich.

I'd have to say As I Lay Dying was the hardest, but the ones I hated the most were The Scarlet Letter, The Catcher in the Rye, and As I Lay Dying

Agree with The Sun Also Rises (seriously, what exactly did the people in that book accomplish?). Also hated anything written by Shakespeare (WRITE IN FREAKING ENGLISH PLEASE!!!) and The Odyssey, among others.

But the one that takes the cake is Walden, by Henry David Thoreau. I could not get through two paragraphs of that book without dozing off and losing focus. Seriously, did that guy ever say anything? I hate this book with every inch of me.

THE WORST BOOKS EVER:

Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance
Heart of Darkness
Red Badge of Courage

POR FIN.

Othello, reading and understanding the old english was painful.

2 Books:

The Spanish Tragedy - Thomas Kyd.... we read this in AP Lit in a version that was quite old and therefore had different spelling of words, etc.

Remembrance of Things Past - Marcel Proust - my AP lit teacher recommended this... and this is one LONG LONG book (7 volumes) and very difficult to grasp conceptually

Heart of Darkness for me as well. I didn't read the actual book because I was too lazy, but even the Sparknotes were boring. I had to reread the same paragraphs a couple of times.

It was horrible.

Tale of Two Cities by far. I had to reread a lot of it because it was so boring and I would zone out. I literally had to pinch myself to not fall asleep.

The Wealth and Poverty of Nations.

Also, I wouldn't say it was a hard book, but I hated it - The World is Flat by Thomas Freidman.

I also hated Heart of Darkness but loved Catcher in the Rye.

:O<---shocked face
some of the books on this list are my favorite of all time:
Catcher in the Rye, The Stranger (Meursault's my hero), Tale of Two Cities (okay the first book sucked, but the next two weren't that bad)

CRIME AND PUNISHMENT????? (dostoevsky=brilliant)

i don't think i saw it on this list (i haven't read the whole thread) but a lot of ppl in my class hated The Metamorphosis by Kafka; I liked it.

someone said that "their eyes were watching god" is a book about poor, uneducated black people who can't speak properly...um everyone in the book talks like that. it's the south over a hundred years ago...(some people still talk like that)

I generally like the books I read for school. The only ones that I have absolutely DESPISED were Moby Dick (Herman Melville is a d*** for writing that piece of ****...lol okay that's harsh but it was SOO boring!)

and

A House on Mango Street (really short and easy to read, but my teacher ruined this one. i can't stand when teachers and literary critics look way into books and find symbols and illusions that simply aren't there...)

I forgot about The Odyssey! I didn't like it at all, and I can't put my finger on why. I think I'm just not a person for reading epics.

Discourse on Method by Rene Descartes, the thing when i attempted to read in sophomore year was impossible to understand.
My favorite reads:
1984
Catcher in the Rye- it does have meaning if you actually READ it not just look at the words but take in the meaning.
Huckleberry Finn
Angels and Demons- not really a favorite of all time but more of just a fun book to read.
A Confederacy of Dunces- funny as hell
The Merchant of Venice- funny, and beautifully written.
As You Like It - i love anything shakespeare, he's my favorite writer and the most thought evoking i thought
All Quiet on the western front
Harry Potter series
I like to read

Crime and Punishment i got bored of after 200 pages
A tale of two cities- i enjoyed this book, though i have to read it again next year for school
By the way Rest my chemistry not to attack you but having read and liked what you read you should know that one of the many good things about books is interpretation, can you prove that there are no certain symbols and allusions? Most of the time critics find these things after studying the book for some time and looking at the situation, location, character names, the list goes on and on, to find a common theme.

The Mask of Apollo (Mary Renault)
Dumbest book ever. Talked about greek homo's, and then jumped to a philosopher invading a despotic state, then talked about Nikerators (main character) career of being an actor... starting with his BORING childhood to the time he performed for philosophers and kings. So boring and confusing... Continually used random theater terms that i never heard of.
