The hardest book you have had the (dis)pleasure of reading?

Heart of Darkness was the first book in my education that I could not finish. Absolutely, breathtakingly stale and pompous.

I'm forcing my way through Crime and Punishment too.

Why can't we just read a bunch of Tim O'Brien this year?

I actually didn't enjoy All Quiet on the Western Front at all. I tried to respect it 'cause Remarque was a war veteran, but I'd never ever read it again. :P

henry viii

blaghhhhhh i don't know why i forced myself to do that

I know I'm supposed to love Hamlet because it's a classic, but my AP Literature teacher has been beating it into the ground for weeks. It's so bad that we haven't touched the 11 other books we were supposed to read in this class. We're still on Hamlet, and midterms are this week. Not counting the summer reading, the only other book we've read so far was Oedipus, and we didn't even discuss that in class for more than a couple of days. I've never been much of a reader, so I was looking forward to this class because I hoped the extensive reading list would give me a new appreciation for classic literature, but not anymore. Hamlet ruined it for me.

"Of Mice and Men"

Jesus, the dude dedicates paragraph after paragraph to the setting!!! "And trees.. and the little bushes over yonder..." My god, I was going like: "Get on with the story already!"

I never read it although I was supposed to for english class. I don't think I'll ever pick up a John Steinbeck book again.

The Odyssey. What a boring load of crap.

^
aghhh! I know!!!!
The book is in like a foreign language....

Aw, I liked The Odyssey. The Iliad, on the other hand...

The Catcher in the Rye. I hate how schools make you read books because they are 'classic', and not because they actually mean something...Ergh!

THE PORTRAIT OF A LADY
and THE AMERICAN

i know that henry james is considered to be classic... but for the love of God why...

I actually kinda like reading classics. As opposed to most of my classmates who hate them.
But if I had to pick i think i would have to say The Scarlet Letter was the worst of the books i have had to read. I really liked Catcher in the Rye and I also really like Lord of the Flies.
Great Gatsby is awesome too

Don quijote in spanish, easily the most difficult read ever for me. Its like trying to read the canterbuy tales in middle english, except in spanish which is not my native language. Really good thouh.

my favorite reads, not very difficult though include:

wealth of nations, adam smith
in search of lost time, marcel proust...each volume is good
i hope they serve beer in hell, tucker max
faustus...marlowe
the godfather...puzo
frankenstein...shelley
canterbury tales is hilarious. especially, what was it merchants tale? when the old guy marries that young girl and he goes blind and the girl and some other guy are having sex in the tree with him right there and he gets his sight back...very funny
oedipus/antigone/electra...sophacles
the general theory of employment, interest, and money...by keynes
a moveable feast, hemingway
confederacy of dunces
neon bible
arcadia...stoppard
well...i read a whole lot

Though it was short, I hated Albert Camus" "The stranger". English teacher kept wanting us to analyze it as an existentialist text, but in my opinion, the main character obviously has autism.

Best book series: The foundation trilogy by Isaac Asimov. Soldier through the first 100 or so pages and you'll find one of the most epic novels ever written.

...and the Hitchhikers' guide to the galaxy series by Douglas Adams is some excellent satire.

paradise lost and the origin of the species in ONE damn smester. jesus. they are the reason alone i'm not taking the AP semster.

^^Haha! You know, I kinda thought Pearl from The Scarlet Letter had Asperger's syndrome.

This wasn't hard to read, but honestly, I just NEVER got this book.

My Antonia by Willa Cather

stabs self Seriously. First off, I never understood the accent on the first "a." And then, I just never got the "boy dated this Bohemian girl, then he left and went to Harvard, and then when he returned, she was married to another guy" thing.....

Great Expectations was also kind of a bore to read though the part where Miss Havisham burns to death was great.

Although I think it's one of the more difficult books to like (Meursault's not exactly a relatable character), I liked it. It kind of makes you think as to where and how you get your morals and if you're truly alienated from society, then where do you get your morals exactly. I think I liked it more after reading Crime and Punishment because I flat out disagreed with Dostoyevsky.

You forgot racist. Conrad was pretttttttty racist in the book, actually.

Hated Great Expectations sooooooooooo boring. I love to read books but despise anything by Dickens =P

Jazlyn are you serious!?!?! The Catcher in the Rye is one of my favorite books of all time. I never had to read it in class. I'd recommend reading it on your own, might enjoy it more.

Lord. Focking. Jim.
