IF you look earlier on in the thread we discussed the z-list and decided that since the number of people on the z-list was entirely impossible to determine, there was no point in worrying about any variation in the number of people put on the z-list and how that number affects us waitlistees. And, if you read the Crimson’s article on the z-list you will notice that the people accepted off of it last year take up spots in the class of 2014. So the size of the class should be unaffected.

It would probably be best not to get your hopes up for the Z-list (this was created almost entirely for unqualified legacies who need to delay the start of their education in order to have a chance at passing). They only get in because Harvard wants a stake in their parents’ will, not because they actually worked for it. If you don’t meet those basic criteria, there is a 99.999% chance you will not be Z-listed. However, you may have a shot at getting off the ordinary waitlist. All of us do.

I suspect that the waitlist is huge. Our school NEVER sends anyone to Harvard, and this year there are three waitlisted, one of whom is totally unremarkable and got rejected from all but one school. Go figure.

I’m waitlisted and committed to Princeton although Yale accepted me yesterday… this is a conundrum. I wish I just knew about Harvard so I could figure out what to do about Yale since I have to reply by the 19th. Crisis

Well, I assume the Crimson article about yield will be out tomorrow since the last two years the article has come out on May 8th and Monday is the first weekday after that.

Interesting Plumazul. I don’t think anything can be inferred from Wash U. not taking any people off the waitlist. But it is good to know that colleges are starting to be happy with the people in their class of 2014. It implies that soon Harvard will reveal what is going on with the waitlist. Hope for tomorrow!

i’m hearing so many people getting off of yales waitlist…not to be the downer, that really can’t be good news for harvard waitlisters though can it? as there is so much overlap between those two… :/

I think what shows from schools like Yale and Princeton taking off their waitlists is that yield is down at many top top places. This is probably due to the fact that although the amount of applicants has stayed consistent, the number of applications has risen, which means yield must go down, even at places like HYP. I don’t know how Wash U got their yield so high (other than my matriculation), but great for them, although it probably has no bearing on Harvard.

Can I just nitpick something? A school not pulling from its waitlist does not mean that their yield is higher than a school that is pulling from its waitlist. It does not necessarily even mean it has a high yield at all, just a higher yield than it was expecting to have.

A lot of schools anticipated lower yields this year, so admitted more students to compensate. I don’t know if WashU was one of them, but if they were, they could actually have a worse yield than last year, and still not pull from the waitlist.

If Yale and Princeton have lower yields, it either means that smaller schools did well against HYPS this year, or Harvard and Stanford (relatively to other years) kicked their butts. Stanford had a reasonably high yield this year, so I’m going to lean towards the latter. If schools that cross-admitted with Harvard have lower yields, than Harvard is probably going to have a higher yield.

By the way, I’m on the list of waitlistees on this thread and matriculating at Yale. I will likely matriculate at Yale either way, though, and didn’t send any supplementary material. Truthfully, my parents insist I stay on to see if I can get in.

I thought I would post an update since everyone seems to be wondering. All I can say is that we as a group are really impressive (hope that didn’t sound arrogant).

Welcome! I’m putting college of matriculation in brackets. Please state your own and I’ll add it!

If your name is in bold PLEASE come out and say hi so we can confirm that you are remaining on the waitlist! Thanks!

Updated with wonderful lurkers. More people should come out and join us! (106 people so far; 84 for sure-22 unknown)
