The Harvard Waitlist Waiting Room 2014 Thread

I am really not worried about the waitlist; I am more interested than nervous to hear the response. Unlike MSauce, however, I would definitely consider Harvard if I get in, but I really don’t know what I will actually decide. (The main reason I stayed on the list originally was that Harvard and Yale were my two top choices, and I preferred them over Penn. Now that I got into Yale off the waitlist, however, I don’t know what to think about Harvard…)

I actually didn’t have a chance to visit any of them; I’m leaning towards Duke because its better undergrad focus compared to Cornell’s and better job placement in Investment banking and consulting and so on, but I haven’t fully decided. Cornell has i think better engineering program and better hard sciences–math, physics, chem, computer science… Wish there was one factor that makes me go “A-ha!” and decide. sigh

Hey I’m a lurker on the thread (I’ve read seriously all of the 90 pages lols)

i’m matriculating at Cornell U. I’m on the waitlist for 4 schools, but the big H is my top choice!

good luck today guys! it’s bed time for me in Aus now though
totally gonna check my email first thing in the morning :D

No, my S is not a legacy. But in his letter to the Committee after being waitlisted he made it VERY clear that he wanted a gap year if one could be offered (hint, hint) and told them exactly the plans he had already set up. He figured that by giving the Committee the most options he would increase his odds. As a kid educated in England, where nearly 50% of his classmates will do a gap year, the idea of stepping out to catch his breath, metaphorically, is commonplace-- I think it also has to do that the preparations for the A levels are so intense now (esp since they introduced the A* as the grade that is needed for Oxbridge), the kids are exhausted by the time they leave school.

My wife has posted about his call yesterday, so don’t add him to the “numbers.” BTW, if there is someone waiting on Chicago as well, I hope this opens a spot!

As a “lurking family” we want to wish all of you the best-- you are a terrific community and I am certain that with the caring you all have shown each other, it will carry you or your S/D forward into whatever dreams they will have in the future.

Question: What’s this about AP credit becoming meaningless unless you want to apply for advanced standing? Can’t I skip my intro calc classes if I get a 5 on the BC exam?

No skipping, as far as I know.

But don’t they at least grant placement, if not credit?

How can you still be “deciding” between Duke and Cornell. How did you get around the May 1st deadline? Or did you “accept” both slots, and will tell one of them “just kidding” when you decide?

^ well, he accepted at one (before May 1st), and then was selected off the other’s waitlist? Occam’s razor would point to this as the answer …

Will emails be arriving today??? anyone know the time??? ARE YOU SURE ABOUT THIS??? I really do not know what to expect, please share any results!!!

I called the admissions office today and the official I spoke to said that emails will be sent out today to those who have been accepted or rejected (letters will be going in the mail today as well).

You will only get an email if you had requested to receive decisions by email.

ALSO, if you do not receive an email or a letter, then that means you have been placed on the extended waitlist.

This is all I know. Hope this helps.

oh man. i should’ve mentioned that i’d like a gap year as well… i mean when i talked to my reg. officer i think i kinda hinted at it (i asked about transfer program, etc etc) but not sure if she got it. :stuck_out_tongue: so today’s the day, huh? i just hope i won’t get a rejection… but i’m afraid it will happen… life doesn’t work out as i wish it to be.

Wait so they are not doing it by phone calls anymore?

Yeah that’s what happened, I got off the waitlist for Duke

So does anyone know whether or not they are still doing phone calls? Cause if not I can stop holding my phone like my life depends on it.

Why wouldn’t they send an email for those kids on the extended waitlist as well? It seems strange to leave that group hanging. Was there any indication of time? Will it be 5pm EST again?

Oh, and thanks for the update, lawyer101.

No email yet as of 12:25 pm for S in Nassau County, Long Island, NY

OMG. this must be a sign!!!

I just received an email from my psychology class TF from Harvard Summer School. He sent out this email to everyone on his mailing list apologizing, since his email account was somehow hacked today.

Anyways, the email was from his Harvard email account…you can imagine my SHOCK when I saw the word Harvard in the subject line (which was in his email address)

We all know Harvard will email us today…is this some sort of sign!!!

LOL :D

P.S. I am waiting for the sake of knowing if I could get in. I will be declining if I am offered a spot (unlikely). G’luck guys!!!

Then why’d you accept the waitlist position? It seems rather pretentious to see if you get in if you already know you’re not going to go. Also, it wastes the Adcoms’ time.
