my daughter took the SAT twice and the best she did so far is 700 cr /680 math /620 writing . she is ranked 6 out of 140 ( top 5 %) gpa 3.8 and w : 5.2 , she took 8 APs and she got a 4 in French last year, she took the ACT one time and got 30 she has a lot of leadership like President of junior and senior class and secretary of NHS ), community services 400 hours and the highest rank in JROTC ( Coast Guard ) : Battalion Commander.
Also she has two citizenships she is American and French, but no legacy, she is an immigrant, white, female, no money.....what do you think ? can she have a chance to get in a Ivy college , like Yale or Columbia ? or she must forget about applying to those selective schools ? Thank you for giving me your thoughts... we are very anxious here.... good luck to all of you !

Got into University of Pennsylvania, Emory University, and Carnegie Mellon with a (math + reading) score of 1300. My highest single sitting test score was 1270. My highest combined score was 1970, I believe. My GPA (at the time) was about 3.78 unweighted. I got into Penn Engineering with a 530 on the SAT II Math subject test, which is below average... Seriously, I'd subscribe to that "random dart" theory right about now. I was honestly applying for the sake of applying. I never thought I'd get in, but I'm glad I did.

Granted, I'm also a first generation Nigerian-American who is also the vice president of National Art Honor Society and our school's art club, Historian of Tri-M, Librarian and Operations chair in our marching band, and a member of National Honor Society and Science National Honor Society. Still, I don't think any of that makes up for bad test scores.

Will they still accept my final transcript even though I've been getting straight C's in Calculus?! ;____;

^^^ Congrats!!!

Level 3
Accepted: UNC, UVA, Maryland, Binghamton, Cornell, other **** i forgot
Denied:None=]

congrats to all!

If you know where you're attending, can you state the name and a sentence or two on why you chose that school? Might be helpful for future applicants.

Best of luck!

Honestly...
This is the most awesome thread ever!
I feel like I may actually have a chance of getting into a great school!
CONGRATS to all of the new Ivy students!!
Hopefully I can meet you all there in about 1 year! :D

for all those hopeful people out there (including me)

I know 3 people who got 19_ _ on their SAT I and got into Stanford. (no joke and they were all asian as well)

And I know a girl who got into Yale University with 19_ _ .

^^ But did all of them have a major "hook"?

I ask this because people who got into elite schools with low SAT scores (for top school standards)tend to have either an amazing life story or amazing accomplishments or both.

I love this thread :)

boho: to get into ANY top school you need an amazing life story or amazing accomplishments...whether you have a 1900 or 2300 SAT.

Let me say this one last time:

SATs are NOT everything; there are many, many times each and EVERY year where people who aren't "supposed" to get in, do. Likewise, there are many, many times where people who ARE supposed to get in, don't. SATs should be the focus for 4 hours of your life; ECs, community service, etc. should be the focus for 4 YEARS of it. Realize this, and you will no doubt be successful in the college admissions process, whether your goal is Harvard or San Jose State.

Level 4

Princeton, Stanford, Penn, Cornell, Duke, Northwestern, Penn State.

boho_girl,

not that i know of. the person who got into yale was from a very wealthy family, was asian (surely, that is not a hook?) and didn't win any prestigious stuff. hack, she wasn't even on the honor's list.

about the guy who got into stanford, the most amazing thing (EC wise) was that he played sax for 3 years.

i don't think they had any major hook.

level 4
Cornell

Low level 3 SAT, 31 ACT, into Stanford, Duke, Vanderbilt, UVA...going to Stanford

That is very encouraging. Congratulations to everyon!!!!
