Everything is important buddy

Most schools have an holistic approach to admissions, which means it's important, but how much? It depends on how strong the rest of your application is.

Well it is important as the transcript is the most important factor supposedly. If one is a straight A student, they'd expect close to As...I don't think they would look at a "B+" and say "oh that student got all As and a B+ first quarter, so they aren't as strong" I mean I guess if you're an A student and got Cs first semester that could be a bit suspicious.

so essentially it is just extra confirmation of the applicant's academic performance.

It is very important to have at least the same grade trend as usual. If you your grades are low, they think you aren't taking senior year seriously, and it could cause them to not admit you. On the other hand, if you have okay grades, and do grade senior year, it could help you.

so if you lose your virgin 4.0 first semester of senior year, it's ok? or will that really hurt you?

Not majorily. Maybe a little, but as long as it just one or 2 B's, its not a big deal.
