According to a random Harvard admissions staff member who answered the phone, they do consider the fact that an applicant had a sibling who attended or is currently attending the college. There’s no such thing as a ‘sibling legacy’ though, unfortunately. I am not sure if this applies to Cornell.

I’m talking about a certain situation about recommendations we are all aware of. I suggest nobody mention it starting now as Mods do read these threads and it can draw unwanted and potentially harmful attention. Please refrain from talking about recommendations from now on. PM me for any more explanation.
Just the other day I saw bubbles mentioning it in full view to all the other posters on another non- Indian forum.
And this forum is full of posters talking without any restraint about the situation of recs. Do remember, that this is digging your own grave.

Just like QAS is discouraged on the SAT forum but still is exchanged through PMs, let the Rec talk be BANNED from this forum. If necessary, use PMs.
Also, on any new threads about Recs, please refrain from making any “in detail” comments. If necessary, again do so by PM.
This is for our own good. Do we want to reach college or not?

pixie, chances are college admissions officers know about ALL of it. This is their JOB. They obviously know the status quo. CC is only an insignificant source of knowledge for them.

^^ Stop it yaar. She’s not a ■■■■■. She’s just still to know how the world works. Give her a break.

^itsmylife- You go on talking about it then. I’m going to refrain from now on. And I would advise you against making silly assumptions without concrete proof.

Pixie, you SERIOUSLY think that we are the first people to talk about stuff like this? I think you are being very naive. But in any case, I will refrain from talking about it, as I always have.

Oh, no. I don’t. After scouring a bit through previous threads from 2009, 2008, 2007 I have come to the conclusion that we are the first to go into such detail. And remember, the forum wasn’t watched before. It was too spam filled and the Mods apparently didn’t care then.

Talking about it? Yes.
Subtly? Yes.
Hardly mentioned? Yes.
That’s what they did.

Talking about it? Yes.
Subtly? No.
In full descriptive detail? Yes.
Spelling out disaster? Yes.
That’s us.

^ Hmm then I guess I, too must apologize for posting about the recs situation in the CommonApp forum. But adcoms really know better, so unless you scream " MY RECS WERE WRITTEN BY…" there really is no problem, apart from the bad name it would give to us.

@ aniruddh: don’t call her a ■■■■■, she’s far from being an ideal poster, but she’s not dumb.

Oh and I think we’ll have to abort our plans for tonight. You two can go ahead, though.

What are you talking about? Plans I don’t know about?
Oh and hi there debarghya! Long time no post!
I agree, bubbles is a nice person and fun too. Calling her ignorance ■■■■■ behaviour is unwarranted. She’ll know better next time! :)

Yeah I agree with Debarghya and pixie actually. She’s still a kid man.

@Pixie: Common friend from Brown (and a CCer) wanted to Skype with us tonight.

Debarghya, he hasn’t replied either so I think I’m gonna study now. If he sends me an FB message or email then it’ll show up on my BB so yeah let’s see… :|

ani, I agree with Nick (a.k.a itsmylife) regarding Rice vs. GaTech.

I have not visited GaTech but everyone knows that it is one of the best for engineering. #1 high tech company in Texas hires a ton of graduates from GaTech every year.

Universities that are well known for engineering get that reputation mainly from their strong graduate/research programs. (HC, RHIT, Cooper Union, RPI, … are exceptions)

Undergraduate scene at GaTech, like any other state school, is dominated by in-state students. Most out of state students who come to GaTech for undergraduate studies are from those states where flagship state schools are not good for engineering. It doesn’t make sense for someone from say Illinois or Texas or Virginia to go to GaTech. I can understand why someone from Kentucky or Florida might want to go to GaTech. For these people GaTech is cheaper AND easier to get into than Rice.

Rice is a totally different type of school. It is very special - small, close-knit and well rounded. Undergraduate engineering education at Rice is just as good and competitive as GaTech. Rice is closely tied to NASA/Johnson space center in Houston. Chemical and Biomolecular engineering at Rice is one of the best.

Sorry to say it, but all your rec posts, apart from Pixie’s initial one, fail to be subtle. IMO- please no one reply to this and henceforth drop the topic permanently.

There. That said, I’m submitting my Harvard app tomorrow! Wish me luck. :)

Hey guys, how is your counsellor filling in the conversion of marks into A,B,C,D,E thing in the International Supp to the CA?
How is she going about it?
Mine just didn’t follow the A,B,C thing and used some weird concocted stuff and I I don’t want her to use that in my subsequent applications.
