I was really impressed with Amity when I went there to check scholarship options for our NGO kids.

It can really develop. Sadly most Indian parents still don’t trust private universities.

Ascaris, still don’t agree with you. I don’t agree with your claim that the Indian system stifles creativity. Let’s be practical. If we’re talking about the best universities in the US, let’s also talk about India’s best. IITs for engineering, Stepehens for economics, Hindu, LSR, Miranda House, VIT, Loyola, PUSA, BHU, etc.

Actually, no. I don’t agree with your logical and empirical insinuations. If we are talking about practicality, we’ve been independent for only 65 years and having a population of >1.2 billion, have some extremely important subsistence requirements and wants that take precedence over the sudden emergence of entrepreneurial spirit. However, for its population, relatively recent birth and opportunities, India has created extremely good entrepreneurs.

Following your line of thought, as an outsider, I would think that I am in a better position to compare the US system with the Indian system. However, that’s not true. Having studied both in one of the best high schools of India and that of Europe (not boasting, just providing a sense of how ranks reflect perception), I can tell you that for a country in India’s position, nothing gets better than CBSE/ICSE/ISC. The freedom provided by the systems you talk about translates into free time that is further invested in trivial activities that are branded with fancy names to make them sound useful and important but in fact have no real meaning.

PS. Forgive my grammar, I am doing three different things at the same time, and experiencing an adrenaline rush ;)

Also, I hope that you’re taking this discussion in the same spirit as I am, that is, purely intellectual debate :)

Oops Angaduday: They said it would be 10 days from the end of Feb (29 Feb), so maybe today or tomorrow, I’ll have an email :)

Also Ascaris … here’s what I posted sometime earlier but got lost in the torrent of posts on CC. Maybe it will give you some perspective: [The Secret Weapon of American Science - YouTube](<a href=“Michio Kaku: The Secret Weapon of American Science | Big Think - YouTube”>Michio Kaku: The Secret Weapon of American Science | Big Think - YouTube)

I’ll respond to you a bit later, Tizil. Am somewhat busy at the moment. And of course, this is nothing more than a healthy debate :)

SRCC for Economics… Stephen’s best subject is English I guess… You forgot IIMs they are brilliant B-schools too.

But yes Tizil you are right, India’s best are as good as world’s best… Only problem is that India still has an extremely large population of young adults who are not college educated because of the lack of colleges.

Anirudh, that’s because private universities are for-profit. Till recently (and somewhat even not), the returns on this investment weren’t so great. However, with time you’ll see the change in perception. Also, I agree with you more than with Ascaris.

I also think that the comparison is not fair. If you want to talk about the average “Ram-Shyam College” in India, you should compare it with the average “John Church Mission Junior College” in the US.

I’m being so stereotypical with the names here :o

Ascaris, I am guessing we both are busy with the same thing :D

29 minutes :D

LOL. that awkward moment when you ignore all the big posts for they contain too much serious toughts!

erm, sorry if i interrupted anything.
BTW anirudha and ascaris, what are your match, reach and safety schools? (emphasize more on safety). Leaving you out tizil7, for ur stats are that of an over-achiever! and besides, u’ll get into ivys sure shot! :P

PS can u guys tell me about SUNY and drexel? i mean, i have seen their ranking, and they are that impressive, but MANY people (indians) prefer admitting there?
Purdue’s a good school right? But i disparage it, i dunno why. maybe because its like if you can cough up the money, u’ll surely get in? correct me if am wrong.

Possibly ;)

angaduday - You may be right and it might be just 400-500 students in mechE or a total of 1700-2000 in freshman engineering altogether. I remember discussing this with another parent in a different thread and being shocked at how much larger the incoming class can be compared to a typical engineering school in India which restricts the class to 50-80 in each department. One issue with a much larger class is that there are still a lot of students in your classes as you progress. Your required classes can tend to be much larger during freshman and sophomore years.

My safeties are in India. I can get into the NITs and IIITs through DASA.

Matches: GATech, UIUC, UNC-Chapel Hill, UCSD, UCLA (I guess).
Reaches: Cornell, Berkeley, CMU.

I gathered some info on Drexel and it has one of the best coop programs in the US…and if you take the 3 coop option the tuition fee gets reduced considerably…obviously it is less preferred if one wants to complete graduation and undergrad in continuation…

Sorry for using so many …

@Rew: Haw. I’m not an overachiever! My stats are just average. Also, I don’t think that’s the case with Purdue. However, seeing just how many of my colleagues got into Drexel, it might be the case.

Ascaris, I wanted to do DASA as well, but I was missing the Physics Subject Test, and even though I still have time before the deadline, I think it would be better not to apply since the US decisions are being released earlier :p

@rew - here is my profile

Tizil you are an over achiever for sure … And hope you are a great chancer too as you felt I would get into a few ivys… :-)

Wow, you guys have got the wrong impressions

Hey rev… What do you think about my profile… Will I get into an Ivy League… ;-)

I have a question… Is it possible to cover the living expenses through CPT ?

Georgia Tech

It’s 1:40, hope everyone got the sweet acceptance
