The Indian Thread #20 (a)

To complement Ascaris’s post, I thought I might add some of this ‘smashing news’ :p

[I</a> have SMASHING news! | MIT Admissions](I have SMASHING news! | MIT Admissions)

hey guys, '17er here.
2 quick questions?
1-are the 15’ers frequent here on CC?
2-in the essay section of engineering major prospect students, what exactly does one write on science/engineering? guidelines? how to start? i was trying to write a para or two for my CA essay, for i’ll be like super duper busy with 12 and i really dont want to spoil 12th grades anyhow and i have to do proper time-management anyway. guys?

Occasionally. You’d be better off getting their attention by PMing them. However, as a whole, they are pretty dormant. I’m guessing we’ll see more '15er activity starting April. Who knows? They might just drop by to help us with deliberating college decisions.

Which Engineering essay are you talking about? Are you talking about the supplements? If yes, they need to be personalized for each college with respect to demonstration of your passion to attend that particular college. Don’t worry, creating your application for US schools doesn’t affect school work to the extent of hampering your grades ;)

@Tizil

It will affect grades you do it in Nov-Dec like me ;-P

I remember one of my friends checking that directory out, and calling me up the day before my math board exam being like “Dude, you got into Berkeley!” and I was like “You’re definitely kidding, the results are 3 days away!”

That feeling of anticipation when you know there is proof, which isn’t (yet) substantiated, that you’re accepted to your dream college, ah!
The most exciting three days of my life, though I didn’t end up studying for my math exam at all. Good thing that I love math enough that it didn’t kill me still. Haha, good times. :)

I just stuck my head in the MIT forum and was thinking to myself ‘Here I am patting myself on the back for receiving a UCLA likely amidst people stressing out over MIT despite being accepted or wait listed at universities on the calibre of Caltech’. Sigh. These are the moments when I wish I’d put more effort into school so that I could be part of that crowd.

I too stuck my head in the MIT forum - you might have spotted me. However, I formed a different outlook. I’ll reveal that based on my decision in two days :)

Anybody tried the Unoffcial UCB Results, the one Tizil posted?? May be this time they did it as well, search by your names…;)

I tried it. They haven’t messed up yet. I am not saying this because I couldn’t find my name there :p

They havent messed up yet…I checked
Not with my name, but with someone who just can’t be rejected anywhere.

hey tizil?
heres the supplement essay topic: why are u interested in studying engineering, any experience in or exposure to engineering you have had, and how do you think the programs in engineering offered at princeton/yale/whatever-school-interests-you suits your particular interest?

Oh so it’s a supplement. I’m sure others can contribute their experiences as well. Basically, you talk about your love from engineering. Why you want to study engineering. Please don’t talk about your childhood love for LEGOs. ;)

And I think you answered your own question by the way you framed your answer. Just make sure your answers for Princeton/Yale/Whatever-school-interests you shouldn’t be interchangeable. Find something unique about the place you want to study about.

PS. I’ll add more once I get home.

Couldn’t find someone whom I know is enrolled at Berkeley. Maybe I spelled the name wrong, though :p

Btw, how EXACTLY do u joy down on a paper your love for engineering? I mean, i am not crazy about it either but erm, how do u write that “i love engineering bcoz…?” I can write why the schools engineering program suits me and stuff, but how do i write about something i have never tried my hands on? Erm, like why do i like engineerig?- no idea! I like it because of the job prospects and my love for bio ( jntended major- biomed engineering) …?

BTW Best of luck for the dreaded(at least for me) chemistry exam tomorrow… :)

Did anyone get an invitation to apply for the Drake Scholarship at Cal? YIATG, could you tell me something about it? Though it is explicitly said that,

However, they require me to complete a separate online application, a sealed hardcopy of my high school transcript, two letters of recommendation, and my SAT I score. All of this must be postmarked by 28th March.

Now, who apart from me agrees that this is too much work for someone who isn’t going to be accepted?

Though … another requirement of applying is that,

Spoils my chances  Though I’m sure Berkeley would’ve known about my citizenship? YIATG, Gohan and others … any opinions?

Did anyone else get this?

Here’s the full text:

To be honest, looks like I am reading too much into it. However, I’m not sure why they would like me to go through the trouble of applying if …

Oh wait. I just realized. The scholarship is open to everyone. I just got an invitation :p

Also, on their website, it says that the scholarship is open to prospective incoming freshman. We all are prospective incoming freshman.

That blimp of emotion when you think too much :(

“To be eligible, the applicant must be a U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident by August 15, 2012.”

Doesn’t this defeat the open to everyone requirement?

Ask around and find out if the other mechanical engineering applicants got it. I don’t want to dishearten you, but it seems more of a general email they send to all applicants than something a la UCLA’s open invitation or a regent’s email. The fact that it isn’t personalized at all (they’re asking you, an international applicant, to apply for a scholarship only available to citizens and residents) seems like a dead give away that they haven’t even read your application and just pulled your name off a list.

I could be completely, utterly, atrociously, irrevocably wrong however but that’s what it seems like to me.

EDIT: post ninja’d. Oh well.
