Hey everyone! Just a quick introduction I’m a 2016’er applying from Brussels, Belgium. I’m from New Delhi though. Went to DPS RKP till grade 11, and half of 12th. Now I’m at International School of Brussels.

Gave the SAT twice, both times without prep D: (1840 -> 2100) Have yet to give my subject tests.

I’m hoping for a place somewhere at Georgia Tech, Cal Tech, MIT, Brown or Dartmouth. I don’t have the SAT score for the last three, but I’ve got an ace up my sleeve ;)

Maybe October is a good time to give my Subject tests?

Lawl, everyone thinks that.
You do have the score for Brown (and Cornell, in the Ivies) btw.

Retake the SAT, and aim for a 2250+. If you’re applying from Belgium with a 2250, and are full-pay, there’s no reason why you shouldn’t get into all of the top-10 schools.

Lol, that is great. I hardly have seen any IIT aspirant/toppers like that. Most of them being the ones who skip school throughout the year - or drop for a year, which otherwise is a common tradition in India - and study 8-12 hours a day, and when you question them what they love in engineering, they are clueless or enunciate lucrative jobs as the rationale.

@Tizil7 - hey there! almost the same situation
scored 2010 in the first attempt ; writing it again in october. Sat subjects in november. I am also applying to the top schools…so i hope i cross 2300 :D

@EminemFan - i soo damn agree!!! most of my classmates here dont attend school, go to coachings (which is 8 - 10 hours) and are always studying! when asked about the branch they’re aiming for, they’d reply “anything that i get” ! silly :P

Exactly! I think this coaching phenomena is omnipresent in India. I asked some of my friends what type of engineering they wanted to do and they were like, ANYTHING! As long as we can get into IIT! :|

Hey guys…
I took the SAT reasoninG, completely impromptu. Now im aiming for the one in october with preparation.
My CR seems a little shaky…though im almost perfect at writing and maths sections.
One of my teachers said that the problem lies in my fundamental approach on the CR questions.

To people who manage 700+ on CR :: How do you guys approach(mainly passages)? Do you like read some part of the passage first and then go to questions or do you start straight off with questions and follow the references??

Authoring two books, one in grade 6 and the other in grade 8. And being recognized for that is an ace, isn’t it PrincetonDreams? :P

Woah, really?! Though that isn’t any reason for me to get complacent. :D

I’m taking the subject tests in October. And the SAT reasoning retry in November. If I get a good score in November, I’ll send it in. If I don’t, no one needs to know :D

Haha, I’m sure we don’t mind the seniors giving us their invaluable hindsight ;)

Oh and I just read the “IIT Coaching” discussion up above, and I’m afraid I have to disagree. I got into VMC reg for JEE coaching. Never skipped school. Was social. Obviously didn’t study 10 hours a day and still managed to remain in the top batch there.

Oh and I would like Electrical Engg. I just love how the whole concept is based on a hypothesis and a convention.
I left. To go to Brussels :D

Yep, that’s quite an ace. Just apply for Humanities majors, and you’re set. [Your activities should have a focus. For instance, you can’t be doing science competitions for 3 years and then apply for a Business major. If you’re an author, try to focus your application towards your passion for writing, and your desire to master it through the help of the university’s English program.]

Yep. HYP and D will be harder than the other top-10s because your full-pay status will be meaningless there. But, otherwise, if you apply smartly, you should see many elite school acceptances next spring.

Princetondreams, are you in stanford? If so, thats sooo cool. Stanford is my priority dream schoool! By the way, we would love to know your profile when you applied to stanford. Give us a basic overview of it, plz!

SAT: 2320
SAT 2: 800, 800, 800
GPA: N/A, but straight A’s throughout in a most rigorous program.
Essays: Good, I guess. I spent an entire summer writing them.
Recommendations: I saw one of my teacher recs after submitting my apps, and it was terrible. Like, almost telling the college to not take me. But I now know how much those recommendations are worth.
ECs: Mix of professional experience, athletic/performance arts involvement, and entrepreneurial ventures.
Awards: None that were noteworthy.

Wow, thats a really justifiable profile for Stanford, dude xD
Do you guys think my ECs are okay?

President of Student Council at my school.
President of Science club and almost supervised the Earth Club (we planted like 110 trees all around Delhi, the idea i introduced.)
i have been a participator in debating and editing the school magazine.
also a regular speechmaker at my school
I played tennis for my school for two years.
No oLympiads though and no awards as such.

LOL. I can see you went through the Class of '15 threads pretty extensively.

I think just about every international has the same list of ECs, not that they’re unimpressive or anything. The first two are good, IMO. The rest seem like you just did them to pad your resume.

I can concur with that to some extent, but still it’s better, for a significantly lesser amount of students apply to ivies than the cumulative total of Indian PMT, MBA and B-Tech aspirants. So there’s still life. Obviously, most people would search for the most lucrative option for their interest/aspired career, but in India, the most lucrative career is searched for instead.

Something that someone posted on another forum (planetcricket) about reaching a balanced ground.

And you think all of the students in your batch were the same? I don’t think so. I’m in one-down-from-first batch in my coaching myself, although I don’t study more than 7 hours a WEEK. While most of the students in my batch are some of most imbecile (ironically bestowed with the adjective, mature) people I’ve ever met. Not to mention the faculty as well.

haha you’re not! infact it’d be awesome if you stay and guide us!

same here! I was in FIITJEE earlier until i realised that i’ll need to leave this aside in order to concentrate on my SAT and ECs…they give you tons of homework, call you on holidays and being in the top batch was a punishment! i really hated that! moreover, no one talked to each other ; the only time they talked was when the result was put up or when they discussed the answers after a test…horrible experience!
PS - I’m dead sure people from my batch will be getting amazing ranks… 2 or 3 under AIR 20 or so. They are mad. Out of 40 guys, 15 are international medallists and always get a single/ two digit ranks in olympiads like NSO, IMO etc. Pressure was obvious
