Why do college supplements ask about what other colleges an applicant is applying to? Does it lessen the chances for admission?

Veethiv, which college asked that question in it’s supplement?
Maybe it’s one that I am applying to and haven’t given it’s supplement a serious look.

Tizil7 and Karan , Thanks.
@karan: well, I’m of course inclined towards the Ivies, but Harvard is my first priority.
As I’ve mentioned before, H has a great FA package.
@darkanddown : You’re absolutely right. Stanford has nothing close to a generous FA.
@veethiv: As Tizil7 said, I too might have overlooked the supplements; I didn’t come across any such questions yet.

Hi everybody! This is forum has been REALLY helpful, so a big thank you to all of you!
I wanted some advice:
I just gave my SAT 1, and got 2140 (:’(), 780 Writing, 650 math (i know, terrible!) and 710 CR. Im taking the sub SATs in Eng Lit and Chem in November. I have pretty good ECs and a strong high-school record (97% in 10th boards), CBSE. I’m in 12th now.
I’m into the Arts (even though i have a Science background) and will be applying to Liberal Arts colleges (FA>90%), and I was wondering whether my low math scores will be overlooked in colleges like Wellesley, Williams and Amherst?
My recos and app essays will be very good for sure.
I think this is getting long, so as not to bore you, i wont add my EC’s here!
Thanks  And all the best! :D

Hi guys, I havent posted here in a while, college has been pretty busy but its nice to see the
advice flowing. A word of caution however. Do not take this process too seriously. Let me clarify what that means: I dont mean dont complete this process seriously, of course you should endeavour to do it to the best of your ability but strive for some aloofness from the
result.

To be honest, the US admissions process leaves a lot of people disillusioned because they have certain expectations as to how it will turn out or how it is supposed to function. Dont be under any such impressions. The admissions process here is extremely random for the most part especially for the really elite places. Expectations about results are only going to be deleterious to your mental health in the next few months. Life doesnt end with something like this. In fact, Id like to believe your life could never be decisively set by some unfamiliar doing a psychoanalysis of your potential in 15 minutes.

Also, I know ive reiterated this many a time but its worth another shot. I find the concept of a dream school to be a ludicrous concept and one whose only purpose is to precipitate disappointment. Most of you have never actually been to the colleges you considered your dream. Even if you have, no amount of tours or poring over their websites will give you an accurate gauge of what life is like in that university or how teachers are going to be like. It is therefore the most wasteful endeavour to constantly pine over some place you honestly barely know about. Think about it, is it worth the mental strain of expectation to place so much value on something you barely know anything about?

I know it seems hard right now but good advice is always hard to follow. Do your best for this process and what will come will come regardless of how much you worry or fret. So chill out and give it your best shot!

Could anybody brief me on the documents that need to be submitted for FA?

Also Denison and Reed

Welcome back to the thread Gohan
Nice to see some '15 wisdom once in a while!

@Veethiv: Oberlin! Someone from Oberlin visited my school a week ago and was practically begging the attending seniors to apply there  But it seems like a nice place.

@Akithreep: That’s a very generic question. It depends on whether the school is CommonApp or not and also on other things like their policies and till when they want the forms submitted.

@Cobalt: Hi again! I hope you don’t mind me calling you that, it sounds pro :stuck_out_tongue: How do you have a percentage for 10th grade? As far as I know, all '16ers have a CGPA or a percentile.

ucomm.stanford.edu/cds/2010.html
This is the common data set of StanfordU. Out of a 910 students determined to have need,906 received aid and 821 students’ need was fully met. These stats include both domestic and international students. Although Stanford is not need blind, that means they will consider your financial status in your application, if you get in there is a solid chance of getting aid. That is what I meant by generous.
@akitheerp: Mostly if the school uses common app then it requires the CSS Profile. You can get it on the collegeboard website. Otherwise schools which have their own applications also have their own FA forms which can be found on their official websites.
@darkdown: Financial aid for Asians. That is awesome :stuck_out_tongue:
@mysticgohan: Great piece of advice, I don’t know much about colleges in USA so it would be wrong to assume that only one college can make me happy. So I am ready to give each one an equal chance and if by some miracle I get in,I would be happy and if I don’t, its wouldn’t be the end of the world.

I am confused by that too. Do we list notable literary works or really our favourite ones?

my favourites are Harry Potter series, code of the woosters by pg wodehouse, and the Bourne series by Robert Ludlum

@karan11295- Exactly, I think thats what ‘favorite’ really means.

@Tizil- Hi. Haha, no I don’t mind. Well, the marks were leaked somehow in our school. Everybody got the mark list.

‘The Boy Who Lived’. But yea.
Mine would be…Fountainhead/Atlas Shrugged, Brisingr (amazing parallelism!) and The Elegant Universe. I love those! :)

Oh. Just read and realized something. @Tizil- I’m a '15-er, not a '16-er. Possibly that’s why.
And will somebody please reply to my question? :)

Wait. I’m confused. Being a '15er means that you are set to graduate in 2015 right? Which means you start you undergraduate studies 4 years earlier= 2012. I was in class 10 in 2010, am in class 12 now. I plan to apply the coming Jan, as most of us are.

umm 4 complete years, so you would complete your four years in 2015 and graduate in 2016, i.e, the next year.

I have a question. For the transcripts, if the school cannot send them straight away to the colleges that I am applying to, then can I only send them to colleges with the school’s stamp or the Principle’s signature?

umm shouldn’t you be in class 11th now if you were in class 10th in 2010? I hope this year is 2011. wait, it is. lol @IRBCobalt

only a week left for subject tests !!
So are there any official practice tests available for Math level 2 and physics ? I mean from collegeboard ?

@darkdown: yeah harry potter,i have read a lot of books (seriously a huge lot) but something about HP made it the best. It can’t be explained to non-HP fans.
@cobalt: i have read fountainhead and found Ayn Rand to be amazing.Btw how good is atlas shrugged?? haven’t got to it yet. also brisingr is great,i am eagerly waiting for inheritance.
