The Indian Thread (TiT) # 15

Hi!!
Best wishes to all RDers........
n to all exam takers(lol)......:D..

yeah dudes that sucks, but still I have 2 exams on 22nd and 23rd. But I guess in the long run when youre making a lot of money and resting somewhere in a beach house..ull look back and smile on the "new year that you missed out on!"

I hope so! :D ('Making lots of money', that is. As mercenary as that sounds.)

k_twin -- which board is this? I'm CBSE, and...er. My school is crazy, so we've already had one round of prelims (Dec 1 - Dec 15), then the break, and we're going back to another round.

ISC, my prelims start early jan, finish by mid jan, then we have a week of final classes with the practicals for the board starting in late feb...

ISC:Indian School Certificate Examination.
Dont worry, ur school is not crazy. In my school, v had 2 give 3(!!!) pre-boards in Xth, but thanx 2 that experiment(those 3 pre-boards were conductd first time ever in my school...n the result was that v all were totally f***ed up), v had to give only 1 pre-board exams in XIIth......:D....

3 pre-boards? Oh God, that sounds terrifying! (I was in ICSE in the tenth, and we had only one. Which was relaxing, but I think we all did worse as a result.)

Our board practicals are around the first week of February. And the boards are March 1 - April 4 (crazy, especially since IIT entrance is April 8).

Now that sounds something crazy.....exams ending on 4th April!!!!!!!!

lol my exams are awesome, I have 2 exams and they are one day after each other..so its cool when i Say, my exams start on the 22nd and end of 23rd.

Jesus Christ, the indian education system seems to be an epic killer from what I hear on these boards ^^^^
I remember I think i tried to do a math paper of icse and like got 23%...it was quite funny..

I did both CBSE-12 and A-levels; frankly there wasn't much difference between them. Although i had to mug a lot for CBSE, and had to do practicals on my own for A-levels.

yeah? haha dunno cause I dont do practicals cause i dont take science. but hey, I guess everyones suited in the system that they like best.

what the hell, this year is sqeezing away too quickly... WAITT please.. I still have my essays left!!!

I hope no one else is in the same cruise

What was the transition from ICSE to CBSE like?

Assuming that was directed at me, k_twin (I guess so!) -- it wasn't too bad. The biggest difference is actually English -- tenth-grade ICSE involves quite a lot of analysis/incredibly long answers (I'm not even going to tell you how many sheets I used on my pre-boards, it's just embarassing), and CBSE English is a lot drier than that (quote directly from the text, stick to the word limit like mad, no points for usage/creativity/style.). Transferring from ICSE science to CBSE science in 11th gave me a bit of an advantage, as ICSE covers quite a bit of the 11th portion (and ICSE kids do logarithms, etc. in the ninth, and so have the advantage of being familiar with them in the eleventh).

I despise the CBSE's English system, though. It's ridiculously demeaning, and very annoying if you're more or less a native speaker (which I am) -- apparently, a grammatically incorrect paper can get a higher grade than a well-written paper that expresses a different interpretation from the Standard Board Opinion. Aagh.

(Wow, ramble.)

dda, the Indian system is murderous (mostly because it's memorisation-based, not understanding-based). I officially hate everyone doing A-Levels and US-type exams -- you guys have it easy.

Ah, I know what you mean with regard to English, one of the primary reasons for my switching from CBSE to ICSE after 7th was my exasperation with the standard of English prevalent in the CBSE syllabus.

ISC English's actually quite good, Literature's almost completely analysis (3*500-600 word essays with 2 References) while the language paper, although burdened with inane essay topics allows some scope for creativity.

Yes, I've heard good things about the ISC system. (It lets you use your brain. Score.)

(I switched from the UK system to CBSE in 6th, from CBSE to ICSE in 9th, and from ICSE back to CBSE in 11th, actually, so I have...entirely too much experience. :D)

Sad thing is, most of the really top schools in Bangalore are CBSE (especially the ones in my area) -- and in the eleventh, I was still IIT-obsessed, and ended up joining a CBSE school under the impression that it would give me a better chance there (which isn't even true).

Well I suppose the reason I love the ISC system is the sheer number of pages they allow you to write, what with analysis and all that. As regards the English curricula, well it's really quite farcical to compare. We're doing 3 books, nice amount of Shakespeare (Julius, and our friend Richard II), and some really great poems, with an immense amount of critical thinking required. What's the math/science situation like for you guys in CBSE? It seems to be accepted wisdom that CBSE's slightly more demanding in the sciences, vis a vis ICSE, but as somebody with experience in both, what's your view?

Yea, memorisation sucks!!! Whiles its important to remember some facts, its very very important to understand what the hell you are doing so you can actually appreciate it. My parents tell me thats what's missing in the Indian Education System.

I agree with all the CBSE + Indian Education System bashing that's going on here, I'm a CBSE student :). I'm also in IIT prep classes. Plus I'm applying to twelve American universities. I AM GOING CRAZY.

I always knew CBSE was out to get me. Board exams end April 4th, is there any other proof needed?

It's FIFTH APRIL FOR ME. Go figure.
