The Indian Thread (TiT) # 15

That was the same reason I didn't apply to Columbia, actually. ;) Common App is boring, but it's a lifesaver. (I do like Chicago's app, though -- face it, who doesn't?)

2320 was my second time through the SAT, to be completely honest; I had a 2220 first time. (I would have stuck with that, but the math score was 730, which is below Caltech's average, and so I freaked out. Also, my writing score sucked.) SAT IIs were 800/800/790, but they were all sciency tests, and about three-quarters of applicants to top tech schools get those scores.

I'm more or less an auto-reject for Princeton -- I don't have nearly enough extracurriculars, and my essay is pretty eccentric. (Somehow, I don't think they'd much approve of my particular brand of eccentricity.)

Well, my ECs are ..I think, okay, for India, where ECs are given very low importance... and my SAT IIs were M2 / Physics / Chem, too.

I don't want to discuss this, it's freaking me out. I wrote my Princeton essay on a Douglas Adams quote.

“Life... is like a grapefruit. It's orange and squishy, and has a few pips in it, and some folks have half a one for breakfast.” – Douglas Adams

I did 2 questions wrong in CR, and I got an 800, I did 3 wrong in M, and I got 720, which I think is ABSOLUTELY UNFAIR.

Yeah, Chicago's app is awesome. I would've applied to Chicago, but I thought they didn't have finaid, I discovered they did too late :(.

That's an excellent CR+M score, don't be too worried, a large number of colleges don't consider the Writing section at all as it's too new...

"Space is big, really big" :D You can't beat Douglas Adams
I did the curiosity prompt though...

Yeah, those are great scores.

On an unrelated note, WOOOOOO! Happy New Year YEAH!!

PS:All that excitement because I'm done with aplications :D. Now there is just prelims, boards, university decisions ..oh wait, ****!

TheOneCurlyFry, 800 CR and 720 M are really good scores. :D

I think we might get a bit of leeway re. ECs considering that we are Indian. (Well, I hope.)

And ooh, I love Douglas Adams (especially his Dirk Gently books)! Awesome. :D (I actually quoted Oscar Wilde -- "We are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars.", and wrote a rather serious essay which was more or less the inverse of what I wrote for every other college. Odd.)

Chicago does have finaid, but it's seriously competitive -- they took only 16 internationals who needed aid. (Alas. Considering that I really need it...)

"Space is big. You just won't believe how vastly, hugely, mind- bogglingly big it is. I mean, you may think it's a long way down the road to the chemist's, but that's just peanuts to space."

That's the quote you were looking for! I haven't read his Dirk Gently books :<. I LOVE OSCAR WILDE AS WELL!

Yeah.. I don't want to talk about acceptances and rejectionsa and stats. It's getting me nervous and I still have to do my Colgate essay.

"What would you pursue, design, or accomplish if money were no object?"

Well as it's scores plus EC's time, I thought I'd post. For me, well I don't know, bout as good a chance as any I suppose. 2360 SAT, though of course, once it's above 2200 it doesn't really matter what you get. Nice SAT II's though, 5 x 800, which I hope will be sort of a hook.

EC's well: Major Debating EC's. Few International Wins and the like, so I'm hoping that'll help me with a few of the more debating focussed ivies etc. 2nd Major EC: Quizzing, which I'm not sure they get in the US, so well that's my luck. Decent bit of Leadership, volunteering etc, but of course, I haven't done the following things:
a) Cured Cancer :)
b) Won 25 different olympiads

So, it's not like I've got a great chance. :D

Before I forget:

Anything that happens, happens

Anything that in happening, causes something else to happen, causes something else to happen.

It Is Not Scores Plus Ecs Time.

Anything that, in happening, causes itself to happen again, happens again.

It doesn't necessarily do it in chronological order though. (Nice way of increasing post count :), plus my favorite Douglas Adams quote.)

Ah so it isn't that time? My mistake then.

I'll just go back to tales of 42...

Happy New Year all!

hey noldo and theonecurlyfry, you have really great scores. is it quite natural for ppl having such scores saying that they are auto rejects for this and thats? lol. lets leave everything upto the Allmighty and wait till the decisions.

Now the thing only we can do is to hope, hope and hope for the very best.

and yes shrivats "Anything that in happening, causes something else to happen, causes something else to happen.". i completely agree with D. Adams

i^2

anyways, CBSE schedule is out. its starting from 1st march.

for me its ending on 4th april  a fully disorganised schedule made by the cbse babus

My personal favourite Adams-quote is that whole paragraph involving Zaphod and the drinks from (I think) 'Life, the Universe, and Everything'. Which is really too long to post here, so I won't. grin Though I do love 'The ships hung in the sky in much the same way that bricks don't', and 'Life. Don't talk to me about life.' (Marvin!) and -- well, everything he's written, if I am to be completely honest. :D (I quoted Adams about Earth being in an unfashionable bit of the Galaxy for my MIT essay, actually!)

And the Dirk Gently books are brilliant, if underrated. (I mean, really, fabulous. Cambridge. Horses in bathrooms. Norse gods. Stupid hats. Surely that's a recipe for Awesome?)

(God, I'm a ridiculous fangirl.)

And intelinside -- I probably have better scores than a lot of applicants, but the other areas of my app are really quite weak. (The Common App essay I wrote was incredibly lopsided and one-dimensional -- I talked about maths the whole time -- and Ivies prefer well-rounded kids to people like me. :))

The CBSE schedule sucks big-time. (I'm a Bio student, though, so I finish early. I think.)

Don't worry about the well rounded bit, they want well rounded classes, not necessarily people. I'd imagine that they'd want people passionate about their interests and not people who try to mould themselves to fit the mould. (Nice word choice there, if I say so myself! :D )

It ends on the fifth for me. I have Informatics Practices. wth, anyway :<.

I love everything he's written, as well. I've heard only all five books of the Hitchhiker's Guide trilogy (hehe), but yeah.

Noldo has a score 130 points higher than mine. How are you even putting us in the same category? Mine isn't a bad score by any means, but I could've done much better, especially since I'm applying as an international.

Blah. Back to ECs and scores. I'm nervous about my ECs. Anyone want to see them? I listed all sorts of crap on my resume.

Noldo - stop worrying. You're making me worry.

About the CBSE time-table - They screwed up. 12 days for Computer just doesn't make sense and we cant even use the time to prepare for something else as its the last test. Lame.

ditto the making me worry part :) As regards the 130 thing, well they pretty much view anything around 2200/2190 up as the same thing as a higher score, what's the difference like, 4 mistakes? They recognize that that sort of thing happens.

hi i'm new to writing here...so i'd just like to start of with a chances post (groan!)
