The Indian Thread (TiT) #18

Oh btw, did anyone watch 500 Days of Summer? I just finished it and I was pretty struck by it.

Disclaimer: I am not a romantic

I wish! Haha. Sadly, that isn’t the case. My Brown interviewer told me that interviews have little bearing on your final decision. I can attest that the case is the same for all the top universities.

PS: Most of the top universities which offer interviews DO have interviews in India, not just Yale and MIT :)

@surfup Yep, I’ve heard their Eco depts is one of the best but a) core requirements in science? and b) …I can’t take a science SAT. And it’s a requirement. :/

Bleh. I’m not applying to MIT either. In fact, I’m not applying to any ‘institute of technology’. I’m the fakest sciencie ever.

@MIT is still less exclusive than IIT. IIT takes one in 70 students…

Please DO NOT make that statement EVER again in my presence <_< Its the most irritating thing in the world to compare the 2 ENTIRELY different universities only on the basis of apparent statistics.
(no offense)

Btw, how many of you giving NSEP/NSEC/NSEA this sunday? I guess all the MIT Applicants?
I’m preparing like mad since the last 2 days, but dunno if it’ll be enough. Also decided to drop NSEC even though I registered :frowning: Its better to concentrate on the ones I have a chance than drain myself totally with 3 exams/day
Also, how many of you giving the other govt. olympiads? ie. RMO/ZIO/ZCO/NSEB etc.?

What on earth are the NSEP, NSEC, NSEA, RMO, ZIO, ZCO and NSEB!?

They are the first rounds of the standard Government(NCERT/HBCSE/IAPT/IARCS) controlled Olympiads through which you qualify for subsequent rounds ending in the selection of the Indian team for phy/chem/maths/bio/astro/bio/informatics olympiad. The ONLY Olympiads with universal recognition in the world.

Ah okay. I have been sufficiently enlightened.

I’m giving RMO. LOLIDKWHY.

@surfup - MIT takes interviews in India? where, when! some details, please

Heys

I know Im pretty late to do this. But I was looking for top colleges for Computer Science. I got a list of top colleges, but I am unsure as to which of these provide proper financial aid. It would be really nice if you all could help me classify these colleges on the basis of whether or not they provide proper Financial Aid.

The list might seem long, but its only copy paste. And time is running out.
Just cut and paste the college names into the list at the bottom

Here is the list of colleges:
MIT, Stanford, CarnegieMellon, Purdue(WestLafayette), Duke, CalTech, Georgia

Colleges of Ivy League i.e. Cornell, Princeton, Columbia, Harvard, Brown, Uni of Pennsylvania, Yale and Dartmouth

Uni of Illinios, Washington, Texas–Austin, Wisconsin–Madison, Maryland–College Park, Michigan–Ann Arbor, Massachusetts, North Carolina, Southern California, Minnesota–Twin Cities, Arizona, Chicago, Colorado–Boulder, Florida, Utah, Virginia

List of Colleges that provide Financial Aid

List of Colleges that do not provide Financial Aid

Thanks

@gary:

I wrote the NSEP on Sunday too…how did yours go?

Out of your list only rice and the ivies give aid. Washington University Hopkins and Virginia Tech might also give. Check their websites.

@thebigcheese121
Are you sure?
I heard MIT, Stanford also give aid.
Not sure about the rest.

does aid depend on how well you do or on your financial condition?

Rice gives aid to internationals?

They have scholarships.

@arronie

For the Ivies, it depends on both. You’ll get in only if you have done really well and once you get in they give aid such that you’ll be able to attend given your financial conditions.

The other places give it based on merit. If you can’t make do with what they give you, then tough luck.

@Keshav- MIT and Stanford also give. But your apps have to be very very very strong.

I heard Stanford was horrific in international aid? Like, 10 students a year type? Or is this incorrect?

Also, subject test scores! Quasi, congradulations on the Lit score! :D
