so she was supposed to go to berkeley, but someone else got her into stanford? -_-

It didn't say if she got into Berkeley, or even applied. For all we know she could have been rejected like many qualified applicants. Probably would have been rejected from Stanford too. That's not that inspirational to people around here because they don't know any gardeners with connections. That'll just **** people off. I didn't know a damn person where I got accepted. I haven't even been within 2000 miles of the place. Maybe I should call the NYTimes and tell my story - since I did it on my own.

it's a good story..

i must admit, orange county (the movie) is much better haha

I don't really see how this is inspirational???

She got pretty lucky, and thats about all I see. Did she even apply to Stanford?

technically it isn't because all it shows is that even "unfortunate" people have connections but she is a hardworker and her mother is apparently suffering

LMAO...........

that girl didnt even apply to stanford, so how did she get in? hmmm...law suit anyone?!

I second the lawsuit idea. Every student should get the chance to share a sob story with their very own Stanford admissions officer. All you have to do? Have connections or know someone who cuts the lawn for someone with connections.

so let me see if i can lay out the overall gist of the story....

a foreign girl with little money miraculously knew a gardener for a stanford alum that got her an interview. i dont see where the inspiration is in this story except inspiring people to network with gardeners.

EXACTLY...I'm so pitching my story now. :)

What I find hilarious is how she never even thought of applying. She was giving up before even trying. And Stanford apperently takes these kinds of people over equally hard-working students from top schools who have always dreamed of Stanford and have practically sold their left kidney to try to get there. Kind of puts Stanford in a bad light in my book.

Then again, i'm about to leave for UVA who is mandated by Virginia's gov't to take any rising third-year CC student with a 3.4 or better. What is with all of these top schools bending over backwards for students who haven't always worked their tails off to get to the school, when others who have, arn't getting there?

It's more complex than that. I'm a good example of that.

I welcome more, fully capable, kids from the working classes getting into and transforming the educational system. Petty personal jealousies should be put aside.

This just shows how much influence that alumna had in Stanford. How much money had she donated to Stanford, I ponder? And now imagine if her son had a 1.0 GPA and applied to the Cardinal, I'd bet my farm that they'd take him.

i think you may be confused PTK

Oh, I was refering to the alumna, not to the student who has actually gotten in, for I believe that girl should definitely be lauded for her achievements and the admission is rightfully awarded.

Mr. Sanchez did the gardening for a prominent Stanford alumna and told her about Ms. Alcazar and the scholarship. The alumna called someone in admissions and soon Ms. Alcazar was being interviewed by the assistant director.

renix is the ish!

haha +1

PTK tell that to all the people on here with similar stats who got rejected. It's not about being good enough, it's about BS like knowing a gardener that gets someone in. Just think, what if I knew the plumber of Ruth Simmons, I totally woulda got into Brown. Oh..wait a minute..I am going to Brown. nm nm.

As I was saying......the alumna......
