The Interview of your Life!

I thought they weren’t doing multiple interviews this year…?

Where’d you hear that

Some people bond well with their interviewers, but the interviewer’s report still has minimal impact on admissions. I had a close to two hour interview myself, but even “good” as that is (supposing length is representative of success) I doubt it will make a huge difference.

I’m an alum who interviews. This thread is a bit pointless.

The timing of your interview depends on a number of factors:

 • How long it takes the admissions office to get your data to the alum who runs your region’s interviews (probably pretty consistent)
 • How long it takes the interview lead to arrange your interviewer (wildly variable depending on how busy this person is, and the number of requests coming in)
 • How long it takes your individual alum to contact you (speaking for myself, pretty variable - because I’m given a pretty wide window to conduct the interview)

I know you’re all very nervous - I was in your shoes not so long ago. But if you’re going to try to read tea leaves, this isn’t a very good tea leaf to try to read.

(@adchange - My impression is that the interview is more important at Harvard than it is at most other competitive schools… but you’re right, it’s still nowhere near as important as your academic record or ECs).

Tea leaves?:D:p

@Justforgetme: well, that’s not a bad thing either! I had a kind of mediocre supplemental essay and my common app wasn’t that hot either. They were okay, but not what I wanted. XP

However, my interview is probably ranked in the top 10 or 20 best conversations I’ve had, haha. Lots to talk about-- from an objective standpoint, I got to talk about my whole range of interests. It was my interviewer’s first ever interview, so the fact I went over could be a good or bad thing. At very least, I’ve set some sort of bar. :P

Just a quick update- had my interview today. It was fantastic! I was worried we would not have much to talk about but I was completely mistaken- we had a lot of areas where we connected. I was disappointed we ran out of time because I actually enjoyed the conversation we were having…oh well, at least it turned out well.

I haven’t been contacted either.

How many interviews do they give out? Obviously they aren’t going to interview someone with 19 ACTs and a 3rd grade essay, despite what the website says about availability?

@adchang: I think a stellar report would serve as a boost for an application in a cut-throat pool where most candidates are equally qualified. Ofc, stellar reports are hard to come by, but when they do I think it would have more than a “minimal” impact.

I had my interview a few days ago, and I think it went really well. We met at a Barnes and Noble shop and talked for around an hour. He asked for my test scores, GPA, and we discussed my extracurricular activities and my interest in Harvard. He told me that I would fit in very well at Harvard, and that in his write-up he would tell the admissions committee to contact me. What does this mean? Will the admissions committee schedule an additional interview?

I went to my interview and I believe it went well! Now I just have to take the subject tests tomorrow and pray! For those who are worried, don’t be. It was very natural and easy. My interview was a little over an hour. As long as you know what you are talking about, you’ll be fine. :)

I’m taking subject tests tomorrow as well. They’re not required anymore, are they really that bug of a deal?

^ Yes, because they’re required.

Was anyone else told they would be “contacted” by the adcom like Bosingwa17?

I thought they weren’t doing multiple interviews anymore.

jsungoh, i’m also in the cali area, socal more specifically and i haven’t been contacted by anyone either. I’m extremely worried. Did you get your interview yet?

don’t worry, i havent been contacted either :/

I just had mine today and for all who are worried, don’t be. Walking in to his law firm on the highest floor of a highrise downtown, I was extremely intimidated. I wondered if I would have anything in common with him. Then we got to talking and we talked non stop for about an hour and a half. He seemed fascinated with who I was as a person and what I could bring to harvard. The bottom line is: be yourself. Don’t worry about the best thing to say. The only preparation I did was rehearsing why harvard because that was a segway into the rest of the conversation. Be yourself and don’t worry no matter how intimidating the alumnus may be.

I had my interview and it was completely amazing.

I hope that I get in!

How were all of you contacted? Mail? Email? Phone?
