Is anyone else applying for The Kenyon Review Young Writers' Workshop? I found it online a few days ago, and I'm fairly interested.

(I'm trying to use my statement of purpose from applying to Iowa, but turns out it was about 200 words over the limit, so now I'm cutting out everything that's not essential, which is painful. If I find after that that it's crap, then I'll just write a new one. 300 or less words is hard.)

I'm applying to it also. I'm in a similar situation regarding the essay. I had written a story for my literature class at school which I felt really explained my interest in writing and what I could offer to the program...however it was twice the word limit. I also tried cutting it down, and that didn't work whatsoever.

I think, though, that they want a lot out of the application essay. I think it goes beyond the usual "tell us why you're good and why you're interested". What they're looking for, I suppose, is a demonstration of style, of eloquence, of depth, and of personal experience.

I think the same, and I think mine does that, even though I did cut out about half of it. (Mine is holding at 299 words :))

I don't think they'd require only one piece of writing if they wanted just the normal "tell us why" piece.

Ha, what I'm attempting to accomplish is making it into the first session of Iowa and then the second session of Kenyon because in between the two I have a church camp. That was I'm only home the very beginning of the summer. Two weeks in the middle and the very end. :)

So, musicallylatin, you are trying to do both (assuming you get accepted to both)? Wish I could do the same, but I work full-time during the summer, and I don't think my boss could spare me for that long. That's why I didn't apply to TASP.

Plus this will be my last summer with my senior friends. :(
