The latest from the new President:

Gov. Scott still backs UF’s pre-eminence drive, Fuchs says

“G’ville needs to become a city befitting a top university…”

Well, I hope G’ville never loses it’s small home town feel no matter how big it gets. It grows because nobody wants to leave. It has a real community feel that students as well as full time residents fall in love with.

^^^I agree

I would like to see more small start-ups and technology companies in Gainesville. More jobs would bring in more taxes and services (better schools, and such). This would also lead to more part-time jobs for students (and internships/co-ops), more restaurants, concerts, and the arts. Think more Austin (without the state capital part…) and less Orlando.

He’s definitely on to something, but let’s not ignore the fact that Gainesville is already a great college town. However, I don’t think it’s very realistic to try and turn Gainesville into the next Boulder or Austin. It’s Apples to Oranges (or Florida to Colorado). Geography and probably state and local politics make that outcome highly improbable - that is to say that there’s little political appetite to turn the place into some kind of progressive utopia in the swamp. That and, the scenic beauty of Colorado is one of the main things that draws people to a place like Boulder, not necessarily the school and not a bunch of tech jobs. What he’s saying is let’s develop Gainesville and give people a reason to want to stay here or draw talent here besides the school, though it doesnt look like that’s a problem already.

Isn’t it interesting that UF has chosen to locate one of its research centers in Orlando. This looks like an amazing facility!

@saismom I swear I’m not stalking you. I think it is associated with UCF, no?

Yes! The reason I posted it is because we toured there and it is amazing. Orlando is partnering with UCF in a big way. I just found it odd that a primarily UCF facility/partnership would have a UF research facility included. There is also Nemours and a VA facility.

That is really interesting. Are you waiting on a UF decision too?

Looks like Orlando is trying to replicate the success of the Texas Medical Center in Houston.

Baylor College of Medicine, Rice, Prairie View A&M, Texas A&M, Texas Southern, University of Texas, Texas Womans University and the University of Houston all collaborate with several private and public hospitals to produce one of the largest medical campuses in the world. It is a pretty amazing place, and a great location to be a med student.

@Cshecmia We are keeping all options open. Have had some great news from three other schools and athletics might come into play as well. Just good to have options .

Nice! @Gator88NE. How did you pull that off? Bull Gator or something?

I wish…

Check out what it takes to be a “Bull Gator” and the benefits…

Think I should go for a Sky Suite?

Or should I stay with the “Bull Gator Zone”? (of course, I would simply donate the difference in $)
