<p>I know virtually nothing about it except a few mutterings from my very non-involved straight pals at USC ("they're everywhere, hard to avoid 'em"). Is there a big LGBT contingent, is there some kind of supportive society, is the campus mostly friendly with regards to that, and, of course, any of you guys as worried as I am? =P</p>
<p>Well I know USC was ranked highly in the Advocate’s college guide (like tied for first with Ohio State or something? but I’m not sure), and since it’s the West Coast it’s not exactly like going to Patrick Henry College, haha.</p>
<p>But I’m freshman fall 2010, so I don’t know what it’s actually like. To be fair, USC should be way different from high school for most people in this respect :)</p>
<p>"On April 16, the NYTimes.com’s top story, “Finding a Gay-Friendly Campus,” highlighted USC as a leader in outreach to prospective LGBT students. The article mentions some of USC’s innovative initiatives, including last February’s Campus Pride College Prep Day & Fair and the overnight experience for prospective students hosted by the LGBT-themed Rainbow Floor.</p>

<p>Well…you’re only a short ride away from Hollywood.</p>
<p>Hey,
Fellow gay freshman here. Don’t be worried. At all. Trust me: this school is letting me live in a Rainbow Floor, with 28 other LGBT people, and room with 3 other gay guys. I don’t think such a program exists anywhere else. Oh, and I get to be Rainbow Scholar, which is cool.
Things to think about:
First off, here’s the website: [USC</a> - Gay, Lesbian, Bi, Transgendered Student Support](<a href=“http://www.usc.edu/student-affairs/glbss/]USC”>http://www.usc.edu/student-affairs/glbss/)
You should check it out - just from that, you can see that the gays are pretty big at USC. You can also keep up with it on facebook, if you want, or twitter (links on the left) - be prepared for constant updates
In terms of societies: YES. There is a large number of organizations, all of which are headed by the GLBTA (now QuASA, which I find a terribly ugly name). They recently held elections, and elected an ally for Executive Director for the first time (yay allies!). If you want me to connect you to the Director of the LGBT Resource Center, Dr. Vincent Vigil (isn’t it an awesome name?), let me know (he’s cool). I know a few other gay people at USC, as well as a few that are incoming (2014 FTW!) - if you want to talk to any of them, I’ll be happy to connect you.
Also, you’re doing Interactive Entertainment. I’m jealous. (I’m in CS(Games)… Need. moar. designing.) And since you’re in SCA, you’ll be seeing a lot more gayness/support in your classes, i think (i’ve heard “■■■” way too many times in my CS classes). As for the whole school, I’m only slightly concerned that the superalphamale jock/frat boys may be a little difficult. But they’re hot, so it’s ok
But seriously, I think there are so many supportive people (as well as gay people) that I don’t think you’ll have to be worried. For example, even in fraternities: out gay brothers (and hot ally brothers), with an official Greek Liason and everything… it’s definitely progressive. Then you’ve got the actors, drama people, artists, and lots of other people who engage in the representation of the human condition to stand up for oppressed minorities (that’s us).
So yeah, that was my supergay response. Hopefully, it helped. Let me know if you have more questions (READ: be my friend. now.)</p>
