Okay, so there are a bunch of threads about classes and applying and living conditions but there isn't a lot of information about physically surviving.

Does anyone know some good places to get haircuts that are relatively cheap? How about supermarkets?

haircuts: if your hair is pretty simple to cut and your main goal is just shorter hair...there are many barbers down between 110th and 107th on Amsterdam Ave. who will cut your hair decently for ~10 to 12 bucks.

supermarkets: its hard to find time to venture off to do your grocery shopping...and as a freshman you won't need to. There is a 24 hour supermarket on 115th & Bway which shamelessly overcharges for everything. If you don't feel like getting ripped off you can trek down to 110th & Bway to Dagistino's where the prices are a bit more reasonable. Some people choose to go to fairway on 125th or the one around 72nd....but honestly, in 4 years, i never once went there.

i went to fairway yesterday and was really impressed with the selection there. i'd say the prices are pretty average for nyc too (as long as you dont look for the "organic" stuff)

i think dagistino's overcharges just as bad as morton williams (bway&115) does tho. also, all the "college ____" stores are horrible at overcharging too. if you need something simple like ice cube trays, save yourself the pain and go to bed bath and beyond or target or kmart or something (all downtown)

Shraf, i know i shouldnt shoot the messenger but...i hate you. i firmly believe it is you and the rest of all alumni who have caused this problem. please try to make it up to all of the freshman, most of the sophmores and jrs, and the few seniors by buying us all drinks. thanks

If you want something more than a really crappy Supercuts haircut, it's hard in to find something cheap in NYC. There's a joint called Astor Hair that's in Astor Place that's very popular and said to be a great deal (I think $15 or less for a guy's cut) for a good quality haircut. I can't personally vouch for it one way or another, but it's pretty well known.

Are they actually going to swipe them just because they have the machines?

we'll have to find out....but i'm sure if the cops raid a place they won't be very lenient with them if they know that they're supposed to have a scanner

hahaha.....i really think its just another way columbia is screwing the students out of having fun. We'll see whether or not they stick to this though because business is going to plummet for sure....they are in essence shutting out freshmen, sophomores and juniors....and if the younger girls r no longer there it'll be less incentive for senior guys to go to these bars rather than venture further out. Hell maybe it'll case a popularity surge for the frats.

Oh and about the free drink....keep dreaming, i'm still a poor grad student :P

P.S. this seems strikingly similar to the tailgating policy at Baker last year....and we all know how well that went.

West Side Market is the absolute best supermarket in the columbia neighborhood. Fairway on 125th is better but it's a very long walk, and a longer walk back (you basically have to cab it if you got any amount of stuff).

For haircuts, I'll echo the Amsterdam rec. I go to Three Star Salon at 107th and amsterdam. The token gay guy speaks english, the older ladies (who are better at their craft) don't, but grunts and gestures work OK. And it's $12 for a man's haircut.

Sweet. Denz, I applied for a workstudy job with the undergraduate housing department and they said they'll get back to me with more info. Was that a dumb decision?

I will chime in on how great Fairway is, but also on the LONG walk (up hill!!!) back. I was in NYC this past week helping my d move in to Plimpton, and we made our trip there to stock up. I love that place!!! We searched long and hard on our first visit there for the meat....only to find there is an entire refrigerated ROOM for meats and seafood and such. How cool (sorry about that) is that???

Also, we made use of the fact that they deliver (non-perishables) for a reasonable fee.

karot, if you know anything about databases, web applications, ASP, website development, MS Access, or the like, I may have a few interesting things to tell you. PM me if you happen to have skills in those areas.
