I wore that same Alex Evenings dress in violet. Very comfortable, not clingy, drapes nicely, not itchy. Machine washable and mine needed no alterations. Subtle bling.
So hard to tell what things look like just by looking at pictures. I guess we will have to do sone in person browsing.
No, it was not a last-minute purchase. Probably late by what would be my standards but definitely not too late to have had hemmed.
I love the, âpewter frost,â for a MOG. My concern about sparkly would be how does it photograph?
I am going to include a pic of me with another MOG friend. Seriously, all my dsâs high school friends have been getting married the last couple of years, so if and when our ds ever does get married, I am going to have lots of friends from whom I can draw wisdom/experience re: ALL wedding issues. I digress.
Now, this is just a pic with an iPhone, and her dress was lovely. But, it makes me feel as though I will shy away from bling/sparkly if and when I am ever a MOG. I just donât think sparkly photographs well. I do think a small amount of bling is fine. I love Alex Evenings, and those dresses of theirs that just have a little bling at the waist.
The sparkly in the dress you linked, is more, âshiny,â to me, but the photography aspect would still worry me.
To each their own: I think the sparkly dress looks great in that photo!
Yea, I do have concerns of sparkly/shiny reflections in the outdoor photos. Were it not for that, I might have done mailorder on it last week.
When my daughter got married the MOG wore this same dress in a pretty mauve color.
I looked for a long time and ordered many dresses. I ended up in a simple long navy Ralph Lauren dress I bought from Macys. I like Macys because I had a store to return them to. They also had a good online selection.
After going through this adventure a few times I learned that some department stores have more generous return windows. Saks and Neiman Marcus have online outlet sites but I found that Saks off Fifth didnât offer free returns. I had an outlet driving distance so I was able to return it in person. Many brands offer a percent off for your first online order. @HImom I ordered several dresses from Amazon but be careful to make sure they are easily and free returns. My sister had several that she ordered that were from China and not worth the cost of the return.
For bridesmaids my youngest used Birdy Grey. The prices are good and the fabric was nice. She picked a color and her bridesmaids picked the style that worked best for them. She has also worn bridesmaid dresses from them.
My MOB and MOG dresses both had sparkles but I never noticed any problems in photos. I think if there was any problem, it can be fixed very easily with any photoshop type editing
I love these vintage MOB dresses from Light in the Box:
And on and on. This site has fabulous cocktail dresses, too. If only I had more children to marry offâŚ
Cleaning Instructions:
@VaBluebird
I was confused too; hereâs what this dress says:
- Do Not Wash
- Do Not Dry Clean
- Professional Spot Clean Only

Every dress seems to say âprofessionally spot cleanâ. I would think it would need more than that.
Have you ordered from Light in the Box? They do have some lovely items.
Good point above on this thread about double-checking that returns are free on Amazon as some items are not and prospective buyers can end up paying a lot in postage and having hassles getting and returning items.
It happens that all the items currently on my maybe list are free shipping and free returns.
Kidâs bridesmaids picked a color and got all dresses from the current (at that time) Dress the Population collection. The color was a perfect match even though they shopped different online vendors.
I have seen that on several MOB and it is gorgeous! Recently a MOG on Instagram wore it in a pale blue damask. It comes in several colorsâ¤ď¸
I had the hardest time finding something that I liked for my daughterâs wedding. It was really agonizing - as I hate dressing myself! It was black tie and she wanted the moms & grandmas in floor length dresses. I donât like lace or embellishments or high necklines. Many of the MOB gowns I saw at the time seemed âmatronlyâ to me. I also donât like my arms, so nothing sleeveless (plus it was an outdoor wedding/reception in October so a little chilly at night). I lucked into this one, from Vince Camuto, in navy. It was also on clearance for $60! I loved it! Wore it with a simple necklace & earrings that I ordered from etsy. I have an hourglass shape, which this style flattered, and the back of the dress had a small train. I didnât wear it as low on my shoulders at it shows in the picture.
No, but Iâm thinking about it because some of those dresses are drop-dead gorgeous. I may just have to invent an occasion. (Wouldnât be the first time.)
I also liked the Light In The Box dresses. My concern would be return policy etc. Hoping somebody here will have some experience to share.
The Macyâs dress came! And it fits really well. I am a terrible photographer; will wait to post a picture of me in the dress until I have another guest here. I am so relieved.
Iâve bought several items from Chinese sites but I consider the items non refundable and non returnable so I have not bought anything more than $50, an amount that is acceptable to me as a total loss.
Glad it worked for you! So are you âone and doneâ looking for dresses, or is this your first potential option?
